Little & Friday: A photo essay.

If you’re into food, you already know about Little & Friday, the bakery/café in Takapuna that is famous for its sausage rolls and incredible lemon and coconut cakes and, well, basically all of the food they make.

Yesterday, a second branch of Little & Friday opened up in Newmarket. This is amazing news for us who live on the city side of the bridge. I popped in to take a few photos (below) and sample the treats (one of the lemon and coconut cakes, a quiche lorraine and a cheese twist. And yes, yes, they were all for me. And what?). I was very, very, very happy. The decor is super cute – two big communal tables, animal figurines at the bench and best of all, all their cakes on display. No doubt this place (just like its North Shore counterpart) is going to be very, very popular. Make sure you check them out!

Who? Little & Friday, Newmarket branch.

What? The best baked goods in town.

Where? Inside of Martha’s Fabrics, Melrose Street, Newmarket, Auckland (kind of behind the BP on the cnr of Khyber Pass and Gillies Ave).

When? I did not do enough research to find out when they’re open. Sorry. I am a terrible blogger.

The Matchbox Collections.

All Images/Alex Scott.

Claire Rorke is my friend. Claire Rorke once wrote a very funny, magnificent review of 500 Days of Summer for me. Claire Rorke has a friend called Alex. Alex Scott. I have met Alex Scott a couple of times. Alex Scott works with Claire. Alex Scott is tall. Alex Scott often wears her hair up. Alex Scott is also a painter. Un artiste*.

Recently, Alex finished a big art project called ‘The Matchbox Collections‘. The Matchbox Collections project involved Alex painting series of images on your everyday, 36mm x 52mm Beehive matchboxes:

“Gathered from various media, artists and moments in time, and faithfully rendered in oil, the chosen images are grouped in sets of 10 – an attempt to shrink important elements of popular culture, art and history down to a more manageable size.”

You only have to check out her tumblr to see how incredible and engaging these artworks are. I literally spent one and a half hours staring at them today. Each set of 10 images has a theme – child stars (Olsen twins, Drew Barrymore, etc), cats, Jesus, first ladies, aeroplanes, outer space, royals, sidekicks, and so on. It’s amazing. (More images below.)

Alex started The Matchbox Collections project back in 2007 and finished up, approximately 1500 hours of painting and 3 years later, last year. She will be exhibiting The Matchbox Collections in November so make sure you keep an eye out**!

Things I have discovered since my grandmother passed away on Saturday.

This may be a slightly morbid thing to blog about – and it’s definitely not fashion related, but whilst going through the process of having someone die and having to organise their things and their funeral, and basically tie up all the loose ends is obviously a sad and difficult thing to do, I have also found it incredibly interesting.

In the process of arranging my grandmother’s funeral, a few odd pieces of information have presented themselves. For example, it turns out my grandmother used to be a teacher. Who knew? Nobody. Nobody except for my grandfather who for some reason, declined to share that with anybody until yesterday. How weird is that? So weird. Also, it turns out it’s a chinese custom for pall-bearers to be financially compensated for carrying the casket. Seriously. Today I witnessed equal amounts of cash being placed into several white envelopes for this purpose. So odd. (Also, so lucky for those pall-bearers!) And in what may be the oddest thing to have come out of the woodwork: My grandmother’s birth date on her birth certificate is not exactly correct (I’m pretty sure there was some confusion between her and immigration when my grandparents moved to New Zealand) so nobody really knows what her actual birth date was. How odd is that?! So, so, so odd!

Whilst going through my grandmother’s possessions, someone found something belonging to me. It’s not exactly odd, but it did make me chuckle a bit so I made a video to show you it (above).

Yes, that is Emily Baker in Gucci's Fall 2011-2012 Campaign.

All Images/via tfs.

In case you hadn’t heard already, yes, Gucci’s Fall 2011-2012 campaign is out (more images below), yes it was shot by Mert & Marcus, and yes, New Zealand’s supermodel-on-the-rise Emily Baker, is in it.

Congratulations to Emily. It’s only upwards and onwards from here!

(Also, yes that’s Abbey-Lee sitting on the couch above her, and yes that’s Joan Smalls on the couch to the left of her. Yes, I was sleeping when the news came out and no, I’m not bitter Isaac posted this before me. Well, not really.)

The best poster I have seen this week.

Image/Alessandra Banal

Calling all Wellington friends – what are you doing this Friday night? My friend Dave (and his buddies) are coming to YOU in the form of their band $noregazZzm, and I can guarantee you that you’ll have an awesome time. Seriously. Just look at the poster, it says everything. And for those who need further explanation:
“It’s a fight scene involving Jeremy, Vince and Oscar from Rackets and also Lisandru, Joe and Dave from $noregazZzm plus some other people who have joined in the fight because they’re angry about something. The Rackets guys are using Guns made from their Penis’ and $noregazZzm are being backed up by their robot serval cats who have lazer eyes. The $noregazZzm members have all been killed but succeeded in Raving to the Grave! Dave (deemed the creepy guy in a comment on their review on The Corner) has been killed by the internet hate.”
$noregazZm and Rackets: From 10:00pm at Mighty Mighty in Wellington. Be there.

'Those' Kate Sylvester boots are back again!

Kate Sylvester boots from AW10. Image/katesylvester.com

Remember those Kate Sylvester boots I keep going on about last season? The ones that were particularly beautiful but particularly hard to get your hands on?

Well, they’re back.

I walked into the High Street store yesterday, only to find a black pair of size 39′s in the window. How was this possible?! I didn’t know. I asked the shop assistant for some kind of explanation. She told me they had been remade for this season. I was shocked. I was happy, but annoyed at the same time. On the one hand – how great is it that they are so popular that they are back for a second season?! And on the other – wait a minute, I put a whole lot of time and energy into getting those boots and now they’re just. sitting. there. for. anyone. to. buy?!

Anyway, my point is that I love those boots. I wear them all the time and I suggest you rush into your nearest Kate Sylvester store to snap them up, because no doubt they’ll all be gone by the end of the week.

A guide to surviving the Stolen Girlfriends Club Sample Sale.

Outside the sale.

  1. Wear clothes you can easily change in and out of. The changing room space is non-existent – or at least it was today. Wear a skirt if you’re going to attempt trying on pants and, as always, make sure you are donning attractive undergarments.
  2. Arrive early. I can guarantee you a whole tonne of people will be there and it’s all first come, first serve so you will have to move quickly! It opens at 9:00am tomorrow (Friday).
  3. Take cash. They accept eftpos and credit card, but everyone knows cash is king.
  4. If you own any Stolen Girlfriends Club stuff already, take note of your size. Minimal trying on will be the key when battling super, super warm temperatures (it was sweltering in there today) and large numbers of crazed girls looking for a bargain. (As of 10:07pm tonight, the Facebook event says 1775 people are attending. 330 have ‘maybe-ed’ And by Facebook mathematics, that means at least 1000 people will be crammed into that very small space this weekend.)
  5. Wear deodorant (c’mon people, it’s common courtesy! Think of the others!) and practice patience (Lord knows you’ll need it.)

Important details (ie. the address and hours) as follows:

Being back.

Incase you didn’t know already, I’m back in Auckland, New Zealand. My goodness is it warm here or what?! I am kind of sad but kind of happy to be back. Both at the same time. New York was amazing and the flight back wasn’t so bad, we stopped in L.A for one night and had an amazing home-made meal cooked for us by a professional chef. It was a good night – a good, good night. (Like that Black Eyed Peas song.)

But back to what I was saying before. I’m happy and sad to be back. It’s weird being on a big overseas experience and returning to a place where basically nothing has changed. I don’t know what I expected to have been different, but everything that was left here is still here. (The horrible-ness in Christchurch aside.) Auckland just… lives on. You disappear for 7 weeks, come back and it’s the same. It makes you feel unproductive. It makes you think maybe you need a real job. It makes you wonder where all the time went. It makes you question your existence damnit! (I’ve always been a bit overdramatic, you’ll get used to it.)

So how does one combat this mid-life-crisis-esque feeling? Good question. I don’t know what normal people do, but secretly over the past week I have begun to adopt this approach called ‘Do Something About It!’ (The name is in it’s working stages for now, don’t you worry.) So what does ‘Doing Something About It!’ entail exactly? Well readers, to start off, it involves a lot of changing my state of mind. No more over-thinking, just doing! No more doing things because you feel like you have to, no more FOMO, no more not-doing because of what people think, no more! Be a less crazy and less retarded version of Charlie Sheen! Do what Katherine wants to do! Stop complaining! Blog about what you want to blog about! Forget about those people who say mean things! They don’t have to read it if they don’t want! Fight for what you want! Try things without pre-empting! Maybe instead of writing things off because they ‘will probably be lame’, just be open minded! You don’t know if they will be if you don’t even go! In fact, maybe I will like tomatoes if I just try them! (Though, I doubt it.) Take a chance!!! Stop being scared of failure! If you didn’t like your service, tell them instead of internally complaining about it!

Well that is the theory anyhow. It’s a bit Tony Robbins but so far it’s working okay. It’s tricky and it’s going to be hard to change those deep-set ways, but I think it’s going to be good for me.

I’ll let you know how it goes. I mean, there’s no harm in trying, right?

Best Valentine's Day Ever!

Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Sean Lennon and Me.

Firstly, we only had one definite show to go to today, and it was at 6.30pm so we had the whole day off and got to sleep in until 10:30am!

Secondly, it was literally like 10 degrees today. Celsius. The hottest it’s been since we got here. And Thursday is supposed to be a high of 16! Amazing!!!

Thirdly, I bought this amazing carry-on/overnight bag for 50% off at Jack Spade.

Fourthly, I had sushi from Dean & Deluca and it was delicious (below).

Fifthly, Kate and I went into the Levi’s store and got measured to see what kind of curve we were (aka ‘butt to waist to thigh ratio). Demi-curve for the win!

Sixthly, went back to The Meatball Shop and had the ‘Heroes’ – a focaccia roll with three meatballs, sauce and cheese and a side of salad (rocket and apple). Delicious!

Seventhly, got to go to the Thom Browne women’s presentation which was at the New York Public Library.

Eighthly, got invited to a party at Le Bain, at the top of The Standard hotel. The view was incredible.

Ninthly, whilst walking through Soho, we came across Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl (aka. The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger, aka John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son and model/actress/it girl). We stopped them as they crossed the road and asked to take a picture. They kindly obliged. They were so, so nice.

Best Valentine’s Day ever!

The best things about the Burberry show.

Bryan Boy in one of the Burberry Prorsum coats from Winter 2012.

  1. I was seated and I actually got to watch the whole thing from my seat. And Tommy Ton was sitting in front of me. And Bryan Boy was sitting in front of him. So basically that means they’re my best friends.
  2. It opened with Dusty Springfield’s, ‘You don’t have to say you love me’. I love the song, and the sound of the horns in the intro of the song was so dramatic. Perfectly perfect for the opening of a show, perfectly perfect all ’round.
  3. The coats. There was basically a coat in every colour and fabric, including a royal blue, suede, single breasted one that kind of reminded me of a shirt my grandpa would wear.
  4. There was a girl there with a barbie doll in her handbag. I don’t know whether it was for aesthetic appeal or whether she really ‘used’ it, but it made for interesting viewing. I actually think the girl may have been Poppy Delevigne, but I’m not positive so don’t quote me on it. See pic below.
  5. It closed with all the boys coming out in clear plastic raincoats over their outfits. Why? Because it was raining. Indoors. Raining indoors!!! The finale began with rain, which poured from the ceiling in a strip the length of the catwalk. So amazing and so, so clever. (Also so, so relevant, seeing as the show was called ‘Weather Boys’.) Check it out in the video below:

NZ model Bella Barber is in Kanye West's new Monster video!

Images/Top - Screenshot from video, Bottom - thefashionspot.com

The teaser for Kanye West’s new video for his single, Monster, was released yesterday.

I’ve watched it twice now and I am convinced that the first model shown on the left (the one 12 seconds into the clip, and the one who pretty much kisses Kanye) is none other than New Zealand model, Bella Barber!

Is this not amazing?!

The video is below for your viewing pleasure.

I’m so sure it’s her that I’m claiming it right now.

That’s just how I roll, bitches.

UPDATE: This has just been confirmed by Bella herself. Holla!

No more stink gifts!

Image/qubicstore.com

There are a couple of reason that I had to post this.

  1. I think the actual Qubic Christmas Wish List idea is pretty cool, and
  2. The campaign image is of my brother in a dress. (Ha!)

Firstly, let’s address what everyone cares about the most – and that is the image. Two things to note:

Request.

I used to dance when I was a kid. Actually, I was still dancing even when I was a bit older than a kid. I never used to be particularly good at it, but I loved it anyway.

So I don’t really bust any moves these days, but I still like to go to the odd performance every now and then and keep tabs on all the young dancers coming out of New Zealand. Speaking of, my brother sent me this video of Request. Request is an all-girl hip-hop crew from New Zealand. I saw them perform a long time ago, and I’m really happy to say that they’ve gone leaps and bounds and have recently been named World Hip Hop Champions for 2010.

See their winning performance below*. It’s bloody amazing:

*There’s also another awesome closer up version of the video. You can watch it here.
