RUBY Pixie Dress.

Recently I was invited to an event with the dress code, ‘cocktail’. As you may already know, I’m not exactly good at dressing up. Casual I can do, but any kind of ‘fancy’ is beyond me. I have many a dress, but none really seem appropriate for ‘cocktail’, and I generally never feel comfortable wearing anything that is cocktail, so I had a bit of a search around and came across this RUBY ‘Pixie’ dress, which is part of their ‘An Education’ capsule collection that Evan Tetreault shot a few months back (remember?). It’s comfortable (eating friendly) and cute. It’s black so it’s versatile, but the shiny, textured fabric makes it that little bit fancy. Note though: You can not wear a bra with this dress, the back is mad low. Boys will probably like it. It actually sold out, but has since been re-cut so we’re all in luck! We can all go to cocktail events with no stress! Hoorah!

PS: The clutch is Isabella Anselmi from Overland, my lipstick is Ronnie Red by MAC. My hair is a mess so let’s not talk about that.

RUBY’s ‘An Education’ capsule collection drops this Friday. Here’s what it looks like.

All Images/Evan Tetreault for RUBY.

Remember when that guy Evan Tetreault was in town a couple of months ago?

Yeah, well, fricken go back and read the post already then. He was here, all the way from Boston where he’s based right now. While he was here he shot a little lookbook and campaign for RUBY‘s latest 60s inspired capsule collection, ‘An Education’. I got to pop along, partly because I was Evan’s ride there, and partly because hello, of course I wanted to see the range. It is really, really cute. Drawstring printed pants, cute dresses – I’m feeling the one above (also in black, below) for some kind of party – it’s definitely a party dress, tops with sleeve ruffles, it’s all good.

So, this range. If you want to check it out, it’s going to be dropping in to RUBY stores this Friday 15th March. If you want to check it out and do a bit of a purchase, the first 200 customers to snap a piece from this capsule range will receive a special ‘An Education’ goodie bag. I have no idea what’s in it but I’m feeling positive about it because I’ve heard it’s worth over $70. In related news, RUBY Designer Deanna Didovich will be in store at RUBY Newmarket on Friday from 12:00pm – 2:00pm to celebrate the release.

Below are lookbook shots of pretty much everything in the collection, and the campaign (both featuring Alyssa Hiyama), and a couple of extra behind the scenes photos – all taken by Evan of course. Happy viewing.

People I met and liked: Rodney Fisher, Part 1.

This is actually a kind of special edition of People I Met and Liked, because there’s an interesting story behind it. Basically, a good eight years ago I went to this recording of ‘Live in the Lounge’. It was a short series of live music performances in a lounge-ish setting, filmed infront of a live audience that aired on the station that was then known as C4 (now known as ‘FOUR‘). My particular ‘episode’ was a show by Goodshirt. Before the whole band came on, the lead singer – Rodney Fisher – came out and sang a song that I always remembered as ‘the hair cut song’. In short, I really liked it and for years my brother and I tried to find a recording of it (to no avail)*.

Fast forward to a just over a month ago. I was on Facebook and a message popped up from Rodney Fisher himself, completely out of the blue:

We got to talking and I told him about how I’d been at ‘Live in the Lounge’ and how James and I would really like a copy of the recording of ‘the hair cut song’ (aka. ‘Artichoke’) because we’d been unable to find it. It turned out that he’d never made a recording of it and I asked him if maybe I could video him singing it so I could post it. He said he thought it should be a duet. I suggested Maddy because she is always singing in the car and I think she’s actually pretty good. He said he’d give it a go. Then we took it to the next level, I asked my friend Ben at Red Bull Studios if it would be possible to record it there. Ben said yes. The rest is history and above is a little video of the recording process with the resulting song as the audio. Happy days.

While this whole thing was going on, I also got to ask Rodney a few questions about things he likes and trends he hates and music and his awesome ‘Songs From The Backyard’ project (take a look, it’s *very nice* (Borat voice)), so that’s coming shortly in Part 2 (when I’ve done the transcribing). Keep your eyes peeled readers, and until then – enjoy.

Big thanks to: Rodney Fisher for all of the above, Maddy Budd for constantly doing things for this blog without complaining and being a closet great singer, Dave Khan for stepping in on violin at literally 10 minutes notice and without knowing the song at all, Murray Fisher for mixing, James Lowe for the hours spent on the video (no time code on video = difficult to line up lips with lyrics) and Ben Lawson for being cool and recording this for us without crying like a little bitch. Also, big ups to Red Bull.

*Someone put up a youtube clip of the performance of that song for ‘Live in the Lounge’ about 9 months ago and for that, James and I are eternally grateful.

Back in Black.

Most of you know I’m not so much one for grunge. I can’t seem to pull it off. Yeah, I constantly look scruffy, but grunge is a whole new level of blacks and hardcore music and attitude that I can’t even begin to get my head around. That being said, with Winter approaching, I’m now on a bit of a dark colours, black jeans buzz. I don’t think I could venture all the way into leather pants, but the above black waxed denim from the current Lee A/W 2013 ‘Back in Black’ range seems like a good introductory option… What do you reckon?

The Dungaree Club.

The Dungaree Club. L-R: Emma and Jennifer (Nova), Renee and Zara (Clyne). All Photos/James K Lowe.

There’s no denying that there’s a bit of an overall trend right now – longs, shorts, skirts, you name it, people are loving it. So, in celebration of this all-in-one trend, last week myself and a couple of others took to one of the local high schools surrounding my home with several pairs of dungarees in tow. We got some of the new kids on the block – four suitably Mean Girls-esque new face girls: Emma and Jennifer from Nova, Renee and Zara from Clyne, paired them up with some of the new season’s dungaree offerings and voila! The Dungaree Club was formed:

Lonely Day #3.

All Images/James K Lowe.

I never would’ve thought to put blue tartan with blue leopard, and even when I was in the Lonely Hearts showroom holding the two pieces I was still quite skeptical. It wasn’t until I’d put them on that I thought, hey – I might be on to something here. I’m pretty conservative so this is a lot crazier than I would usually go for even though it’s just a button up shirt and pants, but I like it, I’m out of my comfort zone with the prints, definitely, but I could definitely get used to it.
