NZFW: Things I've seen at WORLD.

World put on an incredible show on Friday night. The performances, the hair, the make-up, the clothes – nothing short of spectacular. This was a fashion show for the people, and no, it wasn’t your average fashion show, but my was it a refreshing way to end the week. I can’t even really describe the amount of effort gone into getting the girls to look the way they did – you’ll have to look at the pictures. All I can say is, the girls’ call time was 10:00am for a 8:00pm show. Epic. Oh, and can we also just give a shout out to Emma Champtaloup, who closed the show. She stepped out at the start of the catwalk and she owned that whole entire room. It was literally the best model performance I saw all week.

And what did I think about the New Zealand’s Next Top Model winner? I’m happy. Brigette was my pick to win from the start (if you can remember all those weeks back) and I’m glad she did. To be honest, when you’re watching that live, there’s a lot of waiting around and you’re missing a lot of what goes on tv, but it was exciting none-the-less.

NZNTM: Episode 11 in review.

Wow has this season gone fast. Or maybe it’s just me? Two weeks to go and then it’s all over and I have to find something else to blog about on the weekends.

So, anyway, I kind of liked this episode. Sure, there was way too much crying, but otherwise as a general rule I thought it was a pretty good ep – the casting was a good challenge and showed us that none of the girls have spectacular walks and that Brigette and AJ’s are pretty below standard, the shoot was a challenge so we saw how they handled things under pressure, and the lesson was some agent from Next NY which is kind of legit.

But to the photos:

  • Okay, hands down, no question about it, Brigette owned this week. I still think there’s something odd going on with her mouth but she looks amazing in that photo. Effortless. Like I’ve been saying all along – top two, top two, top two.
  • Rosanagh is also going to be top two. I know it. Yeah, her photo is kind of weird and her leg is cropped (which actually doesn’t bother me too much) and she’s not tall enough for international runway, but look at her face. That combined with her energy puts her into the top two in my books:

It has taken me a long time to get around to writing this post. I am feeling quite unmotivated about it which is odd, considering I actually quite enjoyed the episode. The girls set off to Abu Dhabi (minus Aroha who was left behind at the airport – how horrible is that? But how good is it for television?!) and basically surrounded themselves in luxury and frivolity before getting into their photoshoot, which is what we’re going to talk about today.

Firstly can I just say I adore Karen Inderbitzen-Waller. She’s nice and funny and a great stylist/photographer. But as much as I love her, I can not love these photos. In fact, I quite, quite, quite dislike these photos. A lot. But I doubt this is really her fault. She works with what she’s got. And what she got was a crazy concept and a crazy setting. The whole thing just seemed so difficult. The palm trees, the night time combined with the slow shutter speed combined with new models. I don’t know. I think, especially in New Zealand’s Next Top Model‘s case, that the photos should be aspirational. People should be able to look at these photos and go ‘oh wow, I’d love to be her/have her dress etc’. These photos (and a lot over the series so far) do not do that for me. I think they could’ve come up with a better concept for this.

Oh well, they can do better next time. Let the judging begin:

  • You know that when this photo of Bianca (above) is the best of the bunch, that the bunch is not so good. Yeah, so her face looks pretty incredible, she looks tall, you can see the outfit etc etc, but what is with that pose?! It’s some poorly executed pseudo-ballerina type shizz and I really can’t get into it. It makes me feel awkward, and not in a good way. Despite all of this, I think Bianca’s gonna make the top 3.

NZNTM: Episode 8 in review.

Well, well, well. Looky here. Friday night’s ep was the one we’ve all been waiting for. And when I say ‘we’, I mean Isaac and I and whoever else knew he’d filmed the show all those weeks ago. The episode opened with his segment – the “lesson” part of the show. The girls were made to walk down a catwalk while he ‘live-blogged’ his opinions of them.

Many thought he was catty but you know what? At least he was honest. Aroha is bigger than the other girls. She is a plus-sized model. (And as sad as it may be, plus-sized girls hardly ever walk the catwalk and they are often overlooked when it comes to high fashion jobs). You shouldn’t wear beanies during your castings, tights are not pants (he said it – but it was edited out), Hillary’s haircut does kind of make her look like a nineties lesbian, Brigette is kind of boring and AJ is kooky and weird. I can’t really give an unbiased opinion on Isaac’s segment because I know him too well but overall I thought he came across as pretty knowledgeable sounding and relatively normal. Maybe even too normal. I thought he was pretty toned down compared to his usual self.

NZNTM: Episode 7 in review.

Another week, another Friday night on the Top Model grind. This week we found ourselves witnessing a little bit of drama (Did they accuse Tyne of being bulimic?, didn’t they?, who cares?) and a whole lot of tears while the girls faced their fears. (THAT RHYMES.) Personally, I’ve become a bit disinterested in the show. I think I’m waiting for someone to pull out the big guns, and until then, I’m yet to be impressed, here’s hoping for next week.

And here’s some things we learned this episode:

  • Colin can pull out the big guns when he wants to: “Your’e an anaemic bore” (on Hillary). The show needs a bit of this. I’m claiming it as the highlight.
  • Spookers came across as the tamest sh*t ever. I, personally, have been wanting to visit Spookers for years. Literally years. I have badly been wanting someone to scare the crap out of me in an ex-mental institute. After Friday night, not so much.
  • Sara still out-beauties most of the contestants. I’m watching the show in HD and it’s incredible, you can literally see the girls’ teenage skin being, well, teenage… Sara, on the other hand – flawless.
  • Um okay, what is with the styling and creative direction behind all the photographs this season? (Bar the ones they shot with Vinnie Woolsten in Episode 4). Don’t we want the girls to look good? Don’t we want them to look like faces and bodies to aspire to? This week’s photographs kind of look like brand ads for an eco-friendly, New Zealand company. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think we can do better than this. We can do better! We can go more fashion. Let’s go more high end! Let’s take it to a whole ‘nutha level guys!
And now onto the judging of the photographs:
  • AJ (above). I’m still vouching for her. She’s kind of an oversharer, kind of a weirdo and kind of annoying, but I’m still predicting her to make top 5, based on that face of hers and that intense look she can somehow pull out of the bag. I also think she has good lips. I do think she looks kind of fricken ridiculous in that get-up of hers, but I’m telling you now – top 5 baby.

In New Zealand fashion news this afternoon:

  1. Michaela Steenkamp from season 2 of New Zealand’s Next Top Model, has moved from Sara’s agency, 62 models, to Red 11. Interesting. In other related news, she’s looking pretty incredible. Check out her new digi’s here.
  2. This season’s New Zealand’s Next Top Model contestant, Amber Douglas (voted out last Friday), is still in Auckland and will be for the next few days. She’s still repped by Ali McD in her hometown, Dunedin, and she’s still tall and thin. What she isn’t still, is blonde. She’s gone back to brunette. A good move, in my opinion. Check out her new hair in these shots from Model Go-See.
  3. In other New Zealand’s Next Top Model news – it has just been announced that the season 3 finale will be held live, during New Zealand Fashion Week.
  4. New Zealand Fashion Week is being held the week of the 29th August – 3rd September. I will be there (thanks for the prompt media accreditation NZFW!) and so will Workshop and Helen Cherry, but Kate Sylvester won’t. Insert sad face.
  5. New designers showing this year at NZFW include last year’s most talented newcomer winner from last year’s New Generation show, Celine Rita, and Ingrid Starnes. For the full list of designers showing, see here.
  6. New Zealand’s ACTUAL Top Model, Emily Baker, was interviewed by Fashion TV recently*. You have to watch it if only to see how normal she is and how strong the New Zealand accent is. (Also, because it features a small cameo by everyone’s favourite Australian model and all ’round cool girl, Dempsey Stewart.):
