MBFWA: Things I’ve seen: in a dark, smoky room at Manning Cartell.

Manning Cartell’s show was held in a church this evening. When I first entered the premises it quickly became apparent that my photos were going to be more ‘artistic’ than ‘documentary’ (read: you’d get an idea, but seeing the garments in great detail was not going to happen). The place was dark. And smoky – the dry ice was pouring.

Highlights of the show included white on white looks, a tonne of texture, pew seating, a giant houndstooth check, model Ruby Jean Wilson and the best soundtrack of the day (M.I.A and Die Antwoord, anyone?).

See what I saw in that dark, smoky room, below:

MBFWA: Things I’ve seen: at Camilla.

Thanks to a two very kind and generous internet friends, I was able both go backstage and sit front row at the Camilla show today. Running way behind schedule, with over 40 models, the show reminded me of one of New Zealand’s own designers – Trelise Cooper: An established brand, bright, big, prints, showy, amazing goody bags (the front two rows walked away with giant embroidered seat cushions, hairspray, nail polish, earrings, etc) with all the stops pulled. The styling was pretty incredible, pretty out there but amazing to see on the catwalk. Prints on prints on prints was the theme of the day.

Favourite thing? The backpacks. There were some cute and amazing looking backpacks coming down that runway, including a stripey, woven one that I think I could wear with just about anything (see below).

Favourite models? Two New Zealanders made appearances on the catwalk tonight – the first being Ella Drake (you may remember her from such other jobs as being Gucci’s fit model) and the second, Olivia Lefebre (you may remember her from such blogs as MINE). I’ve got to be patriotic and say they were my favourites. Them and the group of kid models that came out at the end (see below) – can’t get much cuter than that.

Here’s what I saw:

Who: Rosemary (Rose) Smith.
Agency: Chic

What did you eat for breakfast today? Nothing – well, I had a some nuts and a muesli bar, but not by choice.

What do you love and hate about fashion week? I love getting to see and hang out with all the girls, I hate having to wake up at 4:00am.

What trend/s do you hate? Hipsters – sorry Isaac [laughs]. Oh wait! I should’ve said chinos!

Pick two – Attractive, emotionally stable, intelligent: Attractive and emotionally stable.

What’s the best thing about Australia? The beach.

What’s the last thing you bought? Food from the grocery store.

MBFWA: Things I’ve seen: at Gary Bigeni.

Gary Bigeni was my first show of the day – at 12:00pm. I strolled into the Theatre at lunchtime after a morning of chilling out, relaxed as ever and feeling pretty good. If only every fashion week day was like this.

My favourite piece from Spring/Summer 2012-2013? A raglan sleeve, (what looked like) silk shirt with small collar and 3/4 sleeve – reminiscent of your classic baseball tee, the shirt used had a cream front and beige sleeves (see below, paired with striped, panelled skirt).

Favourite model? It’s hard to say because there were so many good girls in the show. Girls of note? Rose Smith – you may remember her from such shows as Chanel, Jemma Baines, Nicole Pollard, Louise Van der Vorst (who recently split from Silverchair frontman, Daniel Johns) and Rachel Rutt.

Overall a pretty good first show for me – wearable, polished, pretty clothes on some pretty damn good girls. Special mention also has to go to the use of ‘Blogger Blue’ in the collection. (If you don’t know what that is, look it up.)

Highs and Low(e)s.

Esther Cronin, behind the scenes at Untouched World.

Highs:

  1. I’m in Sydney, duh.
  2. I’m in a hotel with a kitchen and lounge (albeit quite small) and washing machine and dryer. And rooftop pool and spa. Duh.
  3. Took some great behind-the-scenes shots at the Untouched World Spring/Summer 2012-2013 shoot on Thursday. Esther Cronin moves like a champ. She worked it for a solid 13 hours. That’s what I call a professional.
  4. The ability to tether one’s iPhone to their laptop. I swear this technological advancement has changed my life, especially in the last two weeks. No more paying $60.00 for 800mb of hotel internet! No more not being able to blog because there’s no wifi! All internet all the time! The internet is my friend.
  5. Workshop’s new(ish) site and online store. Now we can all get our hands on this, no matter where we are. PS: Give ‘em a little bit of love and chuck their new Facebook page a ‘like’ whydontcha?! It’s got behind the scenes shots of their new outlet store (the party to celebrate is this week – get your invite!) and all sorts of good stuff.
  6. I’m the least organised I’ve been for any fashion week I’ve done thus far, yet I’m the most relaxed and calm I’ve been in a long time. I’m feeling good, guys. Feeling good.
  7. Spent the afternoon with Olivia Lefebre, who was recently interviewed for Oyster. She’s looking amazing. She’s gonna kill it this week fo’ sheezy.
  8. This post.

Low(e)s:

  1. Most turbulent flight to Sydney, ever.
  2. Most turbulent flight to Sydney, ever, sitting next to a still-drunk girl (it was 9:00am, she got home at 4:00am) with a stamp on her wrist, who turned to me and said, “don’t be surprised if I fall asleep on you”.
  3. Had no sleep on Thursday night, with a 4:15am get-up time, followed by a 13 hour day. A total awake time of around 37 hours. I don’t know how I did it.

Happy Birthday N Model Management.

All Screenshots/Supplied.

One year old and New Zealand’s newest and arguably fastest growing model agency, N Model Management, has redesigned their website to celebrate (sneaky peek above and below). Going live at 12pm today, New Zealand time, the site boasts a whole development/new faces board, talent/commercial board with some all too familiar faces on it (…check them out!) and an in-the-works music management section.

Exactly 365 days ago today director and founder, Ngahuia Williams, opened N Model Management for business. Since then, a two man band with 15 girls, the agency now has five staff and represents over 50 models including some of New Zealand’s best working models – Georgia Fowler (above), Penny Pickard, Ngahuia herself, and – hold on – isn’t that face below a little familiar…?!!

Happy Birthday N Model Management!

Things I’ve seen: at Blue Sky.

Seon (Clyne) in Salasai.

On Tuesday night I was at Blue Sky, a small event held at Australis House in Auckland’s downtown Britomart district, created to show three Spring/Summer 2012-2013 collections by Juliette Hogan, Salasai and Alexandra Owen. Pioneered (and named) by Fashion PR company, Showroom 22, Blue Sky intends to be an annual event for buyers and media that showcases Spring/Summer collections (as you may already know, New Zealand Fashion Week shows Autumn/Winter ranges). In future, Showroom 22 hope to grow the event to include various other New Zealand labels.

But to the point. It was Tuesday night, I showed up and immediately I was impressed. The turnout was pretty damn good, there was food (!) and drinks and the place had a really great vibe. It was almost like a fashion reunion – everybody catching up and mingling. I can’t even think of any fashion media that weren’t there. You know what else was great? The models. My god we’ve got some great new girls at the moment. Kendell? Amazing. Dasha? Hello! Kelvin? Not a New Zealand but she’s here at the moment so let’s claim it. I can’t even mention them all, everyone looked great, the clothes looked great, everything was great.

Here’s what I saw:

Models I met and liked: Gabrielle Carter.

Gabby Carter.

Name: Gabby Carter
Agency: Red 11
Age: 18
Height: 5’10″

How long have you been modelling? How did you get into it?
I started just before I turned 15, so three years ago. To be completely honest, I think I was a little bit too young at the start. A friend introduced me to Red 11. I’ve been modelling ever since.

Things I’ve seen: Wellington Fashion Week, Day 2.

Neverblack on the runway.

It seems as though the show producers heard us on Thursday night, because Friday night’s show (in terms of production) was a lot more together. The models walked at the pace I like (quick) and were sent out at more regular intervals, making for an overall  punchier show – evident in the audiences faces – everyone was much more engaged. Fantastic.

Here are some of the things I saw:

Backstage at Julian Danger.

Hey guys, so I’m still getting used to working my way around this new(ish) backend of my blog so posting has been a bit sporadic. Apologies, apologies. Anyhow, I think I’m getting the hang of it (just in time for Australian Fashion Week!) – let me know if anything appears a bit weird on your browsers.

On Thursday night after the first group show of Wellington Fashion Week, I trotted off to Willis York. The Julian Danger show was being held there and I wasn’t really sure what to expect, not knowing the brand that well and not knowing anything about the salon.

Up a few flights of stairs and upon entry, the good vibes were evident. The drinks were flowing, there was a loud buzz and chatter and people seemed to be having a good time. There was a DJ booth, fairy lights and flowers mapped out the catwalk like airport runway lights, the walls were exposed bricks and there was a tonne of art the place. It soon became apparent that this was the place the cool kids come to hang out.

Here are a few shots from backstage:

How did you get into modelling and how long have you been doing it for?
I was discovered by August Models originally at a race car rally derby track. I was just chilling there with my friends watching the cars. One of the bookers approached me, and asked if I wanted to be a model. I said ‘not really’ but I ended up going into the agency anyway. This was back in 2010.

Hey I don't know you and this is crazy but I made this video – watch it, maybe?

If you’re good at the internet, you’ll know where I’m going already by reading the title of this post. If not, get with the programme! Long story short, a good few weeks back I saw the original parody of Carly Rae Jepsen’s music video for her single, ‘Call Me Maybe’ (starring tween heart-throbs Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale) and I was immediately obsessed. Then and there I vowed to make a parody video of the parody video.

I promised myself I would remake the video as part of promotion for Isaac and my ‘Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts‘ tees back in February, but life got in the way and it didn’t get done in time. Nevertheless, a solid month later I did manage to truck on with the project and finally last Thursday night (and Friday night, and Saturday night) I (and a whole host of friends and models*) got together to create what I like to think is nothing short of a masterpiece.

I do realise there are a lot of people who won’t appreciate this at all, but screw them, it was ridiculously fun to make (aside from the 20 hours of editing using iMovie when I don’t know how to operate it). I mean, how often do you ever get to just let loose and act like a 15 year old girl and have it all documented? Exactly! Hardly ever. It was the best time I’ve had in a long time. So with all that in mind, I hope you enjoy.

Happy Easter Monday folks. We up in here.

Models I met and liked: Esther Cronin.

Esther Cronin.

Name: Esther Cronin
Agency: Nova
Age: 18
Height: 5’9″
How did you get into modelling and how long have you been doing it for?
My mom is with Nova. I went into the agency with her one day when she was going to get digis taken and was scouted. I booked my first job a week later – it was for Girlfriend magazine. That was three years ago. I’ve been lucky, I’ve worked quite a lot ever since.
