Highs and Low(e)s/Happy Birthday to Blog

Posted on March 6, 2016

Spectators at a Sports Event, 1933. Photo/Martin Munkacsi. It’s really weird, knowing that I have had this blog for seven years today. SEVEN YEARS. That is longer that Ben’s kid’s whole entire life. I’m so fucking old now, it’s mental. I’ve been thinking about it all day, how all these things have changed in the last seven years and how much of it is documented on here. (Not that it is easy to find now I have taken the easily accessible archive links away.) I had this whole idea last month that I was going to just shut this blog down today, on this birthday, some big dramatic shut down and then just never log in here again and never explain it to anyone…

Better for it.

Posted on February 27, 2016

This morning’s Nike Training Club session on the beach.  I wasn’t sure about titling this blog post ‘Better For It’. Mostly because I know that of all the people who know that the phrase comes from Nike’s current women’s fitness campaign, 70% will write this off as a fitness post that they can’t be bothered read because let’s face it – unless you’re into fitness, fitness can be bloody boring to hear about. So let me be upfront. This post is sort of about fitness, and yes it’s about Nike. No this hasn’t been paid for. In fact, contrary to popular belief, to date I have never taken (or been offered, lol) financial compensation or remuneration to talk about Nike. I mean, there’s no exclusivity here…

Just checking in/Highs and Low(e)s

Posted on February 1, 2016

(I am using James’ computer and he has a great collection of photos on here including this one.) Photo/Stephen Shore.  Wa-ha-ha-haaay 2016 is really up and running huh. It’s bloody February already! I’ve spent the last three weeks ignoring this here blog, not because I’ve been that busy but mostly because I’ve been lazy. So, since January 10th a few things have happened: Firstly, two people I know got engaged, which is mental to me because I still can’t believe I’m at the age where that is normal. I mean, it’s not even just normal, it’s like, extremely common but for some reason not many people I know very well have gotten married. I can’t figure out if that is because all my friends are young/immature…

Goodbye 2015

Posted on December 31, 2015

Photo/James K Lowe. I woke up at 6:23am this morning, the last day of this year. I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t sure if that was due to the fact that I’d left the east-facing venetian blinds up and the light was pouring in and keeping me awake, or because tomorrow is going to be 2016 and my body was telling me to take note and that I was having some anxiety about change.

Late night thoughts.

Bill Cunningham riding off into the sunset at NYFW in 2011. Photo/Me. So it’s 11:27pm on Monday night and I spent the last hour and a bit writing a post about the phrase ‘skinny-shaming’ and how people think it’s equal to ‘fat-shaming’ when in my opinion it isn’t really, and then while I was writing it Ben was looking over my shoulder picking it apart (Ben has been ‘skinny-shamed’ his whole life) and then we got in this argument and then I started crying because I was so frustrated so now I have started a whole new blog post because I feel like now maybe I can’t post the other one, but now I’m not sure what I’m going to write about. I mean,…

I have 24 full days to figure out how to do 25 full push-ups.

Posted on November 7, 2015

My Nike Training Schedule for the rest of the month.  I have 24 full days to figure out how to do 25 full push-ups. Simple enough. I mentioned this last week briefly, but if you didn’t see it I will recap: I am one week into a four-week Nike training programme put together by New Zealand fitness extraordinaire’s Kirsty Godso and Lydia O’Donnell. The programme was built based around some fitness goals I want to achieve and you know, my actual ability. If I’m being completely honest, my usual strategy with this kind of thing is to really play down my fitness level, give myself the easiest goals possible so I know that I can achieve them with least effort possible, post lots of instagrams of…
