New thing: Twenty-Seven Names Cassandra Dress.

Part of the reason my credit card was maxed out is because it’s the start of the season and new clothes have been arriving and my resolve has not been as good as it could be. It’s been pretty good but I have had a few lapses. It’s surprising how you can justify expenses to yourself sometimes. It’s doubly surprising how you can be in a little bit of a negative on your credit card and be very diligent about your money, but once it gets to a lot of negative, it’s too much to fathom and it’s easier to spend more. I don’t know what it is – call it the theory of credit-ivity or something. Who knows.

One of the purchases I made and that arrived a couple of weeks ago, just in time for the new season, was this Cassandra dress by Twenty-Seven Names. I’m not a big maxi-dress wearer, but this appealed to me because it’s not floor length, it looked super comfortable and it’s navy (can’t get much better than navy) and I had this vision of me running down a busy street wearing it with sneakers and a beanie and some kind of bag with my hair out, all carefree and the like. It represented FREEDOM or something, to me.

Oh blah blah blah okay, okay. So what I really mean is that I saw it, I had to have it, I ordered it. I paid for it. It arrived and now I wear it around, feeling all carefree and the like and happy as larry.

Highs and Low(e)s.

Tree lols.

Highs:

  1. I just realised (after over a month) that Turned Out has changed it’s RSS feed. For those of you who use RSS (and really, it should be all of you – get onto it those who don’t), the new link is here. Phew.
  2. One big invoice paid, which means one big payment into my credit card, which (as you will read below) is maxed out. NOT ANYMORE! Now it’s only 4/5th’s of the way to being maxed out (…) ! Hooray!
  3. The Kate Sylvester Britomart store opening. I go to a few events now (well, a lot more than I ever used to) and the Kate Sylvester store opening was good. There was food as well as drinks (can’t get much better than a good canapé) and a live band and it was packed out. El perfecto mi amigos.
  4. Did a fun little shoot this week for the blog. Keep your eyes peeled.
  5. Also had a fun little trip to Christchurch for a fun little meeting. Keep your eyes doubly peeled.
  6. This week’s goal: Get one of our Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts tees to Taylor Swift. Short of stalking out the airport and her hotel (which I’m not completely above), I’m not sure exactly how to achieve this goal… Ideas? (Seriously. I’m completely serious!!!)

Low(e)s:

  1. One credit card maxed out. This has never happened to me before. Ever. I’m not sure exactly what to say or how I feel about owing a bank that much money. It’s like I’m numb or something.
  2. Ummm… I actually had quite a good week. I can’t think of any other low(e)s, just highs. Sorry. Is that a low in itself?

NOTE: In all the hustle and bustle of late, I completely missed my blog’s third birthday. Katherine is Awesome turned 3 years old on the 6th of March and all I can say after doing this after all that time, is that I’m glad that circumstances led me to where I am today. I have enjoyed bringing you my likes (and dislikes) and general ramblings on fashion and life, and I am extremely grateful for all of you that have stuck by and supported this little habit of mine. Humble thanks.

Things I like from the Lonely Hearts Winter 2012 collection.

The cutest (and tiniest) overalls of all time. All Images/James K Lowe.

A couple of weeks back, the Lonely Hearts team invited me over to have a look see of the new Winter 2012 collection and to check out their new offices/workroom – which, by the way, is pretty awesome: airy and light with exposed concrete brick walls, concrete floors, upside down hanging pot plants and exposed ceiling beams.

I went to the Lonely Hearts show back in September and although I really loved it then, it’s even better when you get to see the stuff in person. Because I can’t really look at clothes on the rack and really get a feel for what I like (and because I’m kind of self-obsessed and have become accustomed to having my photo taken), I couldn’t leave without having a little try on. Here are some of my favourite things from Winter 2012:

Highs and Low(e)s.

Me at the Fashion Festival this week. Photo/lanisays.com

Highs:
  1. A tonne of people came up to me to let me know they’d worn their Chuck Taylor’s that day because of me. This makes me happy because it means AT LEAST SOME PEOPLE LIKE ME.
  2. This isn’t exactly a high for me, but it’s a high for my brother James – this week he won the menswear section of the Big Little City street-style comp ($1000 shopping spree was the prize) and tonight he just found out he’s won a big grant to produce work for the Auckland Photography Festival. High fives for James!
  3. I got through the New Zealand Fashion Festival in one piece and I got to hang out with my fashion friends in an environment where we all understood each other. It was kind of like a school reunion or something. We’re best friends for a week then we go our own ways.
  4. I officially have no regular income or regular job. No contract jobs, no nothing. BUT I am working – a lot, and opportunities kept presenting themselves this week. Very exciting. In fact, on Friday I’m off to Christchurch for three hours to meet a brand. Can you believe it?! They’re flying me down just to meet with me!
  5. I ate like a king this week.
Low(e)s:
  1. I spent over $80.00 on parking this week, including a ticket – which goes to show that you should never boast about how you parked over the time limit for hours because it is going to come back and bite you in the ass. (Yeah, I’m talking about parking – and what? Stupid haters.)
  2. I don’t get why everyone can’t just all be friends or at least nice to each other and while I’m at it – why can’t people just have some damn integrity for once?
  3. #passiveagressivehighsandlowes.
  4. I’m pretty sure there are no New Zealanders showing at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (yes, the name has changed) this year. Should I still go? I have flights booked but that is all so far. Is it worth it?! What to do?!
  5. One credit card almost maxed out, one credit card in debt, two bills unpaid. It’s better than last week but it still is kind of a concern…

Highs and Low(e)s.

Sharni and Ariel (Red 11) at the NZ Fashion Festival Flash Mob.

Highs:

  1. Something that never happens to me – I got a shout out from Pikachunes last night during his show at The Departure Club. What up Miles? This post is for you!
  2. Our Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts tees sold out within about 3 hours on Thursday night! (We’re taking orders until Friday for the reprint so if you want one – get your ass over to our online store.) Thanks for all the support. Isaac and I were pretty overwhelmed and we appreciate it muchly.
  3. Speaking of Thursday night: this happened.
  4. This new tv show ‘Girls’ that I came across on Sarah’s blog (follow it! She’s good!). If the show is anything like the trailer (but is it ever?), we’re in for a goodie!
  5. If you haven’t seen it already, you have to watch this video to ‘Call Me, Maybe’ by Carly-someone-I’ve-forgotten-the-last-name-of. The point is, the official video for the song has less than half the views on this version, which includes appearances by Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale. I’m only a tiny bit ashamed to say I’m obsessed with it. And by obsessed I mean I’ve watched it at least two dozen times since Thursday morning. It is just so damn catchy! Isaac and I have been talking about making a re-enactment of the video, so keep your eyes peeled…
  6. I probably shouldn’t say this in public but I went over my parking in town by literally 6 hours and I didn’t get a ticket! Either that, or someone took the ticket off my windshield but I’m pretty sure it’s the first one. Incredible! What incredible luck!
  7. Tomorrow the shows kick off at the New Zealand Fashion Festival. I’ll be around, posting a few special What I Wore Today posts here on the blog. I’ll also be contributing backstage, streetstyle and ‘cool things I’ve seen’ pics to the official NZFF instagram, so to see a more instant view of what’s going on down at Shed 10 – follow it! (Username: NZfashionfest) For those who aren’t blessed with an iPhone – you can check out a stream some of the images (and lots of other things) here.

Low(e)s:

  1. So little sleep time, and such a messed up body clock. I’m talking going to bed at 4:00am, waking up at 7:00am, going back to bed at 8:00am, waking up at 10:00am. Or napping at 3:00pm for two hours. Staying awake until 1:00am, going to sleep and waking up at 5:00am and staying awake until 7:00am and going back to sleep ’til 9:00am. You get what I mean. A life with little routine is pretty nuts. I’m all over the show.
  2. If you want something done right, do it yourself. I don’t know how this is a Low(e) exactly, but it’s true regardless. And while I’m giving great life advice – take note: keep your brilliant ideas close – you never know who’ll throw you under a bus.
  3. I’ve been demoted in the Country Road loyalty club. From a top 5% in the country spender (… I know) with all the bells and whistles and perks, to a mere cardholder who doesn’t even get a spend-and-save in the mail. What happened?!
  4. I have three overdue bills just sitting there right now. They’re haunting me.
  5. Now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure I have a road toll to pay from weeks ago. God damnit.

Highs and Low(e)s.

Olivia Lefebre - Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts.

Highs:

  1. I spontaneously went to the Polo today. I was pretty skeptical at first, but after the long (bus) ride out there, a yarn with a friend I haven’t seen in ages and a few canapés, I was feeling pretty happy. Moral of this story? Food makes everything better.
  2. This video of Tavi (I know, Tavi again, shush yourselves!) singing Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’ live. LIVE!
  3. Our ‘Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts’ tees are labelled, printed and ready to go! Mark your diaries – Thursday evening, here we come!(For many pictures of our attractive friends wearing the things, check out my photo diary.)
  4. This shot of Noah Emrich (from NOVH) by James Nord is so fricken good. The outfit, the pose, the location, everything. He just looks so damn cool. (Sup Noah.)
  5. The Liam launch at the Ruby pop-up store on Wednesday night. Cool collection (keep an eye out for the bright blue pants!) and a cool event with food, drinks and Watercolours playing live. Can’t get much better than that.

Low(e)s:

  1. It’s ‘gutted’ not ‘guttered’! Guttered makes no sense! ARGH!
  2. Stupid voices including, but not limited to – baby voices and pretend animal voices (dogs, cats, etc).
  3. I stood on someone’s sunglasses the other day, and broke them. And not even just a little bit broke them, I broke, broke them. And what’s more, they weren’t even his sunglasses – he had borrowed them from his brother. UGH.
  4. Wow, so that credit card debt is just not going to go away on it’s own, huh?

Chuck on your Converse – I'm out to take your picture.

Erica Rosen in her Chuck Taylors. (And one of the original 'Thugged Out' tees... Shameless, I know, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.)

Hello friends! For the next two weeks  I’m going to be running a little street-style competition in accordance with the New Zealand Fashion Festival and Converse. Basically, starting today, I’ll be on the streets of Auckland City, armed with my camera, in search of cool, interesting looking people in Converse sneakers. Will it be you? I don’t know, but be prepared anyway! The winner of the competition will receive a ‘Premium B’ (that includes goodie bag!) double pass to the Friday night show at the New Zealand Fashion Festival, featuring designs from Jimmy D, MisteR, Hailwood, Zambesi, Zambesi Man, Barkers, Bendon and Stolen Girlfriends Club. As well as tickets to the show, Converse is also going to throw in a pair of Chuck Taylors. Happy days people! Happy days!

So basically, the point of this post is to let you know that you best be donning your Converse and your freshest outfits over the next couple of weeks because you never know who is watching!

See you on the streets.

Highs:

  1. I posted a picture from this new HIV/Aids Awareness campaign on my Facebook page, with the word ‘Thoughts?’ underneath it. I wasn’t expecting much response but boy was I wrong. It turns out people love to give their thoughts on these kinds of things. Check it out (and maybe even give us your own two cents), here.
  2. How good is this Isabel Marant sweater?
  3. Had my photo taken for a magazine on Friday. (More on this later.) For someone who has a gazillion photos of themselves all over the internet and has had their photo taken a multitude of times over the last year, it’s bloody nerve-racking to have your photo taken by someone new or someone you’re not used to. Bloody nerve-racking.
  4. You may or may not have already heard, but Isaac and I are re-running the ‘Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts’ tees in a couple of limited edition colourways. They’ll be on sale on the night of the 23rd of February. Mark your calendars now. More on this as it progresses though, I promise.
  5. I had a really freakin’ good hair day today.
  6. Tavi’s voice is starring in this animated film, Cadaver. The trailer came out this week and she’s singing Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’ in the background. Listen to it. She’s bloody good. And for those who are in New York for fashion week (or otherwise), you’ll be able to hear her sing it live at The Standard hotel on the 12th!

Low(e)s:

  1. Today is the 5th of February – the day I’m being forced to switch ‘Timeline’ according to Facebook. It’s a sad day. The new Timeline freaks me out a bit, the ability to move so far back into my past with such ease is disconcerting. On the plus side, I have gone back to 2008 and deleted (most of) the passive aggressive comments directed at my then boyfriend, untagged myself from the worst of the worst photos (seriously, what was I thinking in 2009?!) and successfully (I hope) rehashed the privacy settings on the whole photo albums thing. Wish me luck.
  2. There is this really annoying problem at my house, whereby when someone calls the landline (I know, right? Who uses landlines these days? Note to anyone thinking of calling me on it: I never pick it up.), it cuts off the internet momentarily. Probably for a good 30 seconds to a minute. It doesn’t sound long, but it is bloody frustrating.
  3. I bailed on three excursions this week, and all just because I got in that ‘can’t be bothered’ mode. I can really be a full on recluse sometimes. I often wonder if one day I’ll die and nobody will know because I hardly ever go out to see anyone and my body won’t be found for weeks and it’ll only be because one of my readers will realise that I haven’t blogged in ages. Wow. Depressing.
  4. Someone recently said to me, “This is why you don’t get close to people – because they f*ck you around. Sweet, sweet detachment.” Without getting into the details, I can relate. If you’re detached you never get screwed over, but at the same time I’m not good at being detached so when I heard that it just made me feel incredibly sad. I don’t know where I’m going with this but it just made me feel sad. Man this is heavy stuff for a Sunday. Heavy.
  5. The ‘Low(e)s’ this week just got real. Sh*t just got too real, guys. Back to the light-hearted fun stuff tomorrow!

This is what I look like when I wear my brother's clothes.

All Images/James K. Lowe.

Very rarely a day goes by where I am not informed that I look like my brother, or that he looks like me. It’s true, James and I look alike – quite alike. We both have those dreaded Lowe-family chubby cheeks, the average eyesight, better-than-usual metabolism, long fingers and toes, tanned skin. I mean, we are related – what do you expect?

What James has that I haven’t seem to have inherited, though (aside from the height and skinny legs) is an innate sense of style. Sure, I like what I like and I can put together an outfit when under pressure, but James – James seems to have looking effortlessly cool, down. Maybe it’s the tattoos,  maybe it’s the fact that he’s the kind of person who spends $100 on (White Mountaineering) socks. Who knows? Regardless, the kid is fresh.

Over the weekend, partially out of boredom and partially because I find the whole concept hilarious, we took a couple of photos of me as James. Katherine Lowe, shot and styled (in outfits he actually wears) by James Lowe, if you will. The results are below (along with clothing credits, if you’re so inclined) and the rest (out-takes and the like) are up on my tumblr. Enjoy:

Highs and Low(e)s.

James K Lowe on the driveway.

Highs:

  1. Productivity levels quite high this week. Many meetings attended, hater comments at an all time low, blogging frequency up, came up with so many great ideas this week even. So many great ideas!
  2. Had a few impromptu photos taken yesterday, which I am going to try to post tomorrow. I want to tell you about them because I think they’re really hilarious, but at the same time I think it might only be me who finds them hilarious and I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Here’s a sneak peek.
  3. So many people wanna win those sunglasses I’m giving away!
  4. These two collections, but especially the Acne collection. The outfit second to the left in this photo is MY JAM. The blazer, the cut of the pants, the cream sweater. I swear to god if I find a boy who dresses like that I will marry him immediately.
  5. Whatsapp. I don’t know how many of you out there have a smart phone, but I’d say quite a few. If you don’t have whatsapp you need to download the app right now. So handy! I have had some really great whatsapp conversations this week.
  6. That limited edition run of ‘Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts’ tees is so close to being pushed over the line it’s not funny. Just a few kinks to iron out (read: $$$) and we’ll be good to go. Watch this space.

Low(e)s:

  1. It’s been over a week since I jammed my finger in that taxi door and I still don’t have proper feeling in it… I’m starting to worry.
  2. I went to 10 dairies on Saturday, trying to get my hands on one of those Ice Bar old fashioned lemonade iceblocks. 10. Pretty much every dairy/service station had the lemon lime bitter flavour, some had the ginger beer flavour but nine of them didn’t have the old fashioned lemonade flavour. We went all the way down Ponsonby Road, K Rd and back. It took forever. On the plus side, I do feel like maybe Tip Top should hook me up because I feel like I may be slightly responsible for the sold-out status of the old fashioned lemonade flavour with all my talking about it. You hear that Tip Top?!
  3. “Soz.” I’m guilty of saying it, and every time I do I hate myself for it. I’m desperately trying to phase the stupid phrase out. It’s like an apology that you don’t mean at all, in which case why are you apologising in the first place?! AAHHHHH!
  4. I’ve just been informed that in 5 days I am getting the new Facebook ‘timeline’. Without my permission. Damnit Facebook, why you gotta do this to me?!
  5. I’m back on that broken bodyclock buzz again. 2.30-4.30am sleep times, 8.30-9.30am wake up times. Tired all the times.

Thanks for reading, would you like a present?

L: Persol, R: Ralph Lauren

Ages ago I said if I ever won the fashion category of the Concrete Playground Bloggers Award, that I would be giving back to you readers to say thanks. Well, I did win (insert smiley face here) and as well as the glory, I also got to pick up some pairs of sunnies (thanks to Sunglass Hut) as my prize. Now we’re up to the fun part – where I get to say thanks.

I’ve teamed up with Tim and Joe of The Shutter Pirates (the winners of the overall award) and we’ve decided to conjointly give away two pairs of sunnies and two Shutter Pirates photographs.

How do you win? It’s pretty easy – all you have to do is like The Shutter Pirates and Katherine Is Awesome on Facebook then leave a comment either on this post here, or let me know which pair of sunnies you’d like (more pics below) in the comments on this photo here (not on this post), and you’re in the draw.

We’ll pull two names out of a hat in a fortnight’s time and if it’s yours then we’ll send you an A3 print of your choice as well as a pair of the sunnies that were gifted to me.

Happy Thursday night folks.

Highs:

  1. The Australian Open, duh.
  2. I tried The Ice Bar Co.’s ‘Old Fashioned Lemonade’ Ice-block (twice) this week. I can honestly say it’s one of the best frozen treats I have ever had in my life.
  3. Two projects got underway this week and, fingers crossed that everything goes according to plan, there’ll be some exciting things to come towards the end of next month. I know it’s pretty dumb to say this and not explain further, but I’m of the opinion that nothing’s set in stone until it’s set in stone, you know? I don’t want to jinx everything by sharing.
  4. This week I acquired my very own Ari Gold! From now on – don’t talk to me, talk to my agent/consultant/internet-advice-giver, Nivin.
  5. This is a little off-brand, but if you’re not already reading Slutever, you really need to. It’s kind of really NSFW though – for those who are in the office right now – do not click that link! Aside from being bloody entertaining and well written, the blog is actually kind of liberating.
  6. This awesome piece of fan-mail that L.A.S of How To Talk To Girls At Parties received from an 81 year old in New Mexico, in defence of bow ties.

Remember when I used to be a good blogger?

Two looks from Valentino. Images/showstudio.com

Yeah, neither.

I must sound like a broken record, always telling you that I’m going to blog more and then not following through. If I’m being completely honest, I’m sort of avoiding the internet a bit. Well, as much as one can. Sometimes there’s just too much information. But, in saying that, I do realise that in order for one to actually be a ‘blogger’, one must actually ‘blog’, so in order to make up for the lack of KIA updates (I haven’t updated HERE, but I have updated the Tumblr and put up some things on my Facebook page) the past couple of days, I have compiled a list of things to entertain you until I get my highs and low(e)s on tomorrow:

  • Firstly, if you aren’t keeping up with Texts from Bennett you need to now. If only to make you feel comforted by the fact that someone like that exists in the world.
  • Secondly, this is supposed to be a fashion blog, right? Keep up with the collections, people! And if you can’t be bothered? At least check out the Valentino collection from Pitti Uomo. If that doesn’t blow your menswear minds, it’s time to get your head checked.
  • Tavi may not be your cup of tea, but there’s no denying she’s a full on teenage genius. The girl is incredibly well rounded and smart and basically everything a parent wants in a daughter. You don’t have to read her blog but you do have to watch this. “They were talking about how inappropriate it was for someone of my age to go to Fashion Week, she remembers, but this was coming from an industry that fetishes youth” – Tavi Gevinson. INCREDIBLE.
  • Oh my cake this looks fricken good.
  • My brother did a big photoshoot a few days ago – one that involved 11 models, guns, fire and a long ass drive to Taupo. He’s now got something like a week to get negative processed, retouching done and the whole thing printed and ready to exhibit. He won’t be getting any sleep, you can follow his progress on his blog and see some cool behind the scenes photos from his trip, here.
  • Two words: Gossip Girl.
  • One word: Californication.

Shameless Self Promotion.

Things I've worn.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but bear with me here – some of you may be new readers and some of you may not be aware, but I do a little thing where I document what I wear every day. Well, most days. I started doing it, partially out of curiosity (I want to know what the results will look like after a year) and partially because DOESN’T IT FEEL GREAT TO LOOK AT PHOTOS OF YOURSELF ALL THE TIME? *cough* Narcissist *cough*

I’ve been doing my ‘What I Wore Today’ posts for a couple of months now and, whilst the results aren’t too exciting, they do at least give people the opportunity to see my extensive range of model poses or  laugh at my lack of style or passively aggressively anonymously comment on how I wear the same things all the time. So, if you want to get in on the action (and of course you do, doesn’t that sound like fun?!) you can: Follow me on Instagram (thedownlowe), Twitter, or see the pictures on Facebook.

Happy Tuesday, folks.

Highs and Low(e)s.

The Auckland sky at 8.56pm tonight.

Highs:

  1. Granted, the weather has been a bit up and down lately (mostly down) here in Auckland, but did you see the sky tonight??!
  2. The other week I won $20 on a $3 Instant Kiwi. I claimed my $20 and purchased another two tickets for $6 and won $5 off one of those tickets. If my 7th form statistics (not brainy enough for calculus) serves me correctly, that’s a total of $16 profit! I know, right? And people say gambling is bad!
  3. I know this will sound really lame and nerdy, but man have my tumblr follower numbers gone up this week! And inexplicably. It’s like a bomb went off on Monday and everyone just suddenly realised how great my photos and answers to questions are. Too bad I can’t say the same about Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, but I’ll take what I can get thank you very much.
  4. I went to this quite delicious Japanese restaurant the other night – quite delicious and pretty well priced. I’m talking $10 for a decent sized salmon sashimi and avocado salad and $9.90 for a prawn dish I will definitely go back for. I’m pretty sure nothing was over $15. Everything was presented much more nicely than you would expect from a tiny, off-the-road-in-a-block-of-not-so-attractive-eateries place and I am glad to have found it. You will be too – Banzai on Dominion Road. Look it up.
  5. Blogged more than once this week! (This is my 1100th post, by the way.) Went to several meetings! Sent several emails! YES! Does that mean the blogger’s block/apathy is gone?! Does that mean I’m back?! YES! (I hope.)

Low(e)s:

  1. I’m going to offend a few people here, I have to say it: What is with this ‘le’ phenomenon?! ‘Le Sigh’. ‘Le Angry’. ‘Le Oops’. ‘Le Poor.’ I don’t like it! I don’t get it and whenever I hear it or see it I die a little inside. LE LAME.
  2. This performance by Lana Del Rey. I quite like the song, it’s the performance that I really question. Thoughts?
  3. No one ever gets my tumblr caption jokes. No one. Either that or no one thinks they’re funny, in which case I’d rather just assume nobody understands them.
  4. This week was particularly emotionally draining. (As opposed to all those other weeks when it’s only a little bit emotionally draining.)
  5. I need a job. Or I need to win lotto. Or to marry someone who will keep me in the lifestyle in which I am accustomed. Obviously the second one is preferable but let’s be realistic here.
