New week, new thing: Catroux.

Ordering at Catroux.

This week I thought we might try something a little different – something a little non-fashion related seeing as for the next four days (at least), you’re going to be bombarded (and yes, I mean bombarded – seriously) with New Zealand Fashion Week news.

I like food more than I like fashion, generally speaking, so it seems natural to blog about something foody. You may remember a few weeks back I tweeted/blogged about a new café opening in Westmere: Catroux. Well, this weekend the café opened officially, and I took a couple of girls with me to test it out. This is what we saw (and ate!):

Little & Friday: A photo essay.

If you’re into food, you already know about Little & Friday, the bakery/café in Takapuna that is famous for its sausage rolls and incredible lemon and coconut cakes and, well, basically all of the food they make.

Yesterday, a second branch of Little & Friday opened up in Newmarket. This is amazing news for us who live on the city side of the bridge. I popped in to take a few photos (below) and sample the treats (one of the lemon and coconut cakes, a quiche lorraine and a cheese twist. And yes, yes, they were all for me. And what?). I was very, very, very happy. The decor is super cute – two big communal tables, animal figurines at the bench and best of all, all their cakes on display. No doubt this place (just like its North Shore counterpart) is going to be very, very popular. Make sure you check them out!

Who? Little & Friday, Newmarket branch.

What? The best baked goods in town.

Where? Inside of Martha’s Fabrics, Melrose Street, Newmarket, Auckland (kind of behind the BP on the cnr of Khyber Pass and Gillies Ave).

When? I did not do enough research to find out when they’re open. Sorry. I am a terrible blogger.

Highs and Low(e)s.

Model Andrej Pejic, between shows at Paris Men's Fashion Week. Image/streetfsn.com

Highs:

  1. Milan and Paris Men’s Fashion Week shows. In particular – in Paris: Raf and Louis (I’m not on first name basis with either of those guys but I like to think they’d want me to be), and in Milan: Z (as in Z Zegna). I’m going to pre-empt and add Acne and Lanvin to the list in anticipation, but we’ll see tonight! (Lanvin is on at 11:00pm NZ time, Acne is 7:00am tomorrow morning).
  2. Writing my ‘What a Guy Wants‘ posts. Not only do they (kind of) tie in with the menswear shows, and snigger to myself at the Christina Aguilera reference in the title every time I write one – it’s actually quite fun to write about things you want your imaginary babe of a boyfriend to be wearing.
  3. I got some good questions on the photo blog this week. When I say ‘good’ I mean they required a bit of thought – especially, ‘How would you describe your personality?’ That is a challenging question to (honestly) answer when you’re one on one, let alone when you have to consider the whole world is able to read it. Ever wondered what I’m like in person? Here’s my answer - I think it’s pretty much on the money.
  4. Had a roll and a lemon tart from La Boulange – the french grocer that’s just opened its second café in The Department Store. Both were delicious. It was almost, almost like being in Paris.

Low(e)s:

  1. In this last week I was invited to six different events. I only made it to two of them. That’s a 33% hit rate which is pretty pathetic if you ask me. This was partially because of timing issues but mostly because I’ve become a full on wuss. Leaving the house is scary. People are scary, spending money is scary and the cold weather is scary. It’s safer to stay at home. Just call me hermit.
  2. Had a craving for lamingtons today. Drove all the way to Agnes Curran (granted it’s not that far, but still), left the car with hazard lights on and rushed inside to find that they had sold out. At 2:20pm. So sad. So very, very sad.
  3. Ate 85% of a tub of Kapiti triple chocolate ice cream in the space of four days. Combine this with the fact that my only meal on Thursday consisted of a bowl of Watties bake in the oven hash brown buttons: not positive. How long does one keep a diet like this before they get scurvy?
  4. Today I was kindly informed that my phone number on my email signature is missing a digit. I’ve had that email signature for literally 8 months. At least 8 months. Imagine all the phone calls I haven’t received! I can’t help thinking that I’ve missed that million dollar call. (Thanks for the head’s up Tim Lambourne.)

Highs and Low(e)s.

Me and my Kapiti Artisan Bakehouse goodies.

Highs:

  1. On Thursday morning I got sent some Kapiti Artisan Bakehouse bread. I’ve eaten half a loaf to myself already. It’s good. Really good. There’s nothing like hot bread on a cold day. I suggest you go out and get yourself some. It’ll improve your life, I promise.
  2. On Wednesday night I was standing at the bar at the MTV Classic party, when a guy carrying drinks turns around to face me. He says “Katherine!”, I say “Hi!” (even though I don’t know who he is), and he replies “I’m Conor. I love your blog. Long time reader, first time meeter!” It was the best part of my entire night. (Yes, that is how dull my life is.) THANKS CONOR!
  3. I ate at Mexican Specialities for the first time. I know I’m behind the ball on this one – I’ve been told to go by a billion people for the last year but never really made the effort to drive all the way to Ellerslie, plus the place is only open Thursday – Saturday lunchtimes so the whole thing just seemed too hard, but I had company and someone to take me there on Friday. For those who haven’t been (and live in Auckland), make the effort! The place is delicious! And I don’t even really like Mexican food!
  4. Junior Masterchef. I can’t get enough of those kids. They’re incredible. Tempered chocolate?! How does a little kid know how to temper chocolate?!!!

Low(e)s:

  1. Had to do a cash advance on my credit card. So, so bad. I don’t want to talk about it.
  2. Closed the garage door on my car. Yes, I know, I know, I know. I don’t want to talk about it.
  3. I just don’t want to talk about it.

What I do between shows.

  1. Blog.
  2. Blog.
  3. Eat.
