James and I got asked to do a little shoot for the latest issue of Remix magazine (which is out today) in the same vein as the Penny Sage one we did in the last issue – use some of our favourite pieces from a New Zealand brand that we liked, and photograph it however we want.
We chose to use pieces from Commoners - a brand made of up of, essentially, boutique basics. They create classic pieces – beautiful, worn-in feeling tees, functional and soft knitwear, crinkly linen shirts, shorts that tie at the waist – all in lovely and neutral colour palates and in fabrics that are comfortable, natural and made to touch.
It was interesting shooting a basics brand, because the collection isn’t exactly ‘flashy’ or super ‘editorial’, we kept everything simple and pared back. We used one of our favourite girls, Renee (Clyne) and had the wonderful Paige Best on hair (brief: ‘I just woke up’) and make-up (brief: natural, flushed, freckles were Paige’s genius). Results below:
All clothing by Commoners, except jeans – Levi’s, sports bra – Nike, and underwear – Bendon.
This first featured in print in Remix Issue 84.
