Stephen Marr’s Winter 2012 campaign is one of the best things I’ve seen all year.

All Images/Sam Crawford for Stephen Marr.

The above image sits as a billboard, just past the Mini Cooper shop, on the side of a brick building on the corner of Ponsonby and Richmond Roads. As a person who drives all over the CBD several times a week, I can safely say it is the best billboard I have seen this year. Or maybe the best billboard I have ever seen, ever. I smile literally every single time I drive past it. It’s engaging like no other advertisement I’ve seen in a very long time.

The rest of the images from this Stephen Marr campaign are fantastic too. Sam Crawford has done an excellent job. As have the models, in particular, 62 Models’ Alyssa Hiyama. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful, compelling photo of her than the one immediately below. I’ve had these photos in a folder on my desktop for about a month now, thinking – as with most images I ‘save for later’ – that I’d grow tired of them after a few looks and lose the want to share them. This is not the case.

Happy Friday, readers.

Models I met and liked: Georgia Fowler.

Georgia Fowler, standing in the rain. What a trooper.

Name: Georgia Fowler
Agency: IMG/N Model Management
Age: 20
Height: 5’10″
Ethnicity: New Zealand/Australia

How did you get into modelling?
I joined Clyne when I was 13, but didn’t work too much until I got my braces off at 15. My sister was scouted, and I was too young to be left alone at the time so I went along with her and got signed at the same time. I got signed to IMG when I was 16.

Blue Suede Shoes.

All Images/Maddy Budd.

A couple of months ago I spotted this pair of Opening Ceremony blue suede shoes in the window of Area 51. They reminded me of the kind of thing that Mark McNairy would make, but with less of chunky sole. I wanted them. They’d go with so many things, they were boy-ish (my jam, obviously), I could imagine wearing them with socks and skirts, and socks and trousers, and no socks and everything. But then there was my maxed out credit card to contend with…

I umm’d and ahh’d over them for such so long that by the time I checked on the Opening Ceremony store one day, and they’d sold out. I’d missed out. Yet another opportunity squandered. I was disappointed. Life plodded along, as per usual – except without the possession of the blue suede beauties. That was until last week, when I walked past and decided to enquire within Area 51. It was just my luck! One pair left in my size! What’s that saying? Sometimes things are meant to be.

New week, new things.

  • This week I’ve got something a little different for you. This Thursday evening is ‘Talking Trends‘. Hosted by Debbie Cavit, owner of Cavit&Co (you may have seen the store in Parnell), and Jeremy Hansen, Editor of HOME NZ magazine, ‘Talking Trends’ is an evening that will see Debbie and Jeremy cover fashion, design and architectural trends for the 2012-2013 season, (budding creatives? This is for you.) with all profits made on the evening going to the children of NPH – a non-profit organisation that supports orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America and the Carribean. If the idea of knowledge or supporting children in need (*cough cough*) isn’t enough to entice you along, there’s also going to be an auction that includes jewellery from Wunderkammer and boutique accommodation in Hanmer Springs, Glengarry wines and tapas from Besos. (So much bang for your buck!) I’ll also be there. (Although I’m not sure if that persuades or dissuades you from coming.) If you want to attend, tickets are a mere $45 and are available by calling (09) 354 4354 or emailing events@nph-nz.org.

Highs and Low(e)s.

Highs:

  1. Plentiful amounts of stimulating conversation this week. When a large chunk of your time is spent on the internet digesting internet lingo and slang (#boutthatlifetho) and reading ‘you’re’ spelt as ‘your’ and ‘there’ instead of ‘their’, it’s pretty refreshing to be challenged once in a while.
  2. I went to District Dining for lunch and the launch of the New Zealand division of BooHoo.com on Wednesday. As one who is a little skint these days, it couldn’t have come at a better time – good, fancy food (I had the chicken liver parfait and the duck confit and 3 glasses of grapefruit juice) and a new online retailer that has no item of clothing over $100 (!) and that ships to New Zealand for free. Hot doggggg that’s cheap.
  3. Can someone weigh in on this ‘to camo or not to camo’ debate?!
  4. This. Penny Pickard circa 1999. Now think – that’s 13 years ago. How old do you feel now?
  5. How does anyone afford overseas communication without the use of Whatsapp?! I use it pretty much every day and have an international-nstant-messaging fight with Isaac on it at least once a week.
  6. Currently watching The Ides of March for the second time. (The first time was in New York with Isaac and can I just say, wow Americans are vocally expressive in movie theatres.) There’s this one scene near the start of the film between Rachel Evan Wood and Ryan Gosling, where they’re sitting opposite each other in a restaurant, and they’re flirting like crazy. It’s so good, I dare you to watch that scene without smiling. Also, I forgot how much I love Ry Gos for a sec, but now I’m back to being devoted again so don’t worry.
  7. Another week, another last-name-related-pun. This time, it’s OVERLOWED. As in ‘PUN OVERLOWED!’ Clever, huh?! That came courtesy of someone who owns this gallery, which, coincidentally opened last week, so chuck ‘em a ‘like‘ whydontcha? (Good segue way, I know.)

This is a sneak peek at Zambesi’s S/S 2012-2013 Collection.

Last week I was invited to view Zambesi‘s Spring/Summer 2012-2013 at their old Vulcan Lane store in the city. Expecting it to be your average press showing upon receiving the invite, I was surprised to find an email in my inbox the day before, with the note: “See you tomorrow! You are encouraged to bring a stills camera as we will be providing models and a backdrop for you to style and shoot the new collection.” Intriguing! And such a great idea. Here are some of the shots I got on the day. I put together two looks – no prizes for guessing which ones they are…
