I need winter shoes. This crazy, rainy weather does not support canvas sneakers. It does not support sandals even when combined with socks, it does not support any styles of shoes I own except for two pairs. This is not positive. This current predicament has lead me on a bit of a winter shoe mission, which has lead me to ask the following questions:
1. Can I wear monks?
I know they’re very, very, next-level menswear-ish, but I’m kind of into it. I feel like I could wear them all winter with cuffed pants and tights and everything, and with socks and dresses in summer too. Or maybe even without socks, you know? Am I deluded? The thing is, I think only very special men can actually pull off the monk-strap, and going by that theory, it’s probably even harder for a girl to do so. I’ve thought about this a lot. It’s difficult, because on the one hand, you could look awesome:
…and on the other hand, you could really just look like a boy. But not in that good way. You would have to be wearing the perfect-est pair of monks and exuding the most extreme levels of femininity and confidence to avoid looking like some kind of awkward, badly put together man. There’s nothing worse than people mistaking you for a boy, even if you are dressed in menswear. As stupid as it sounds, the allure of girls wearing boys clothes is not so that they look like an actual boy.
But when it’s good, it’s oh so good.
So what to do? What do you think? I really want to say yes, I really want the answer to be yes, but even if the answer is yes, it still brings me to the following question:
2. Where does one purchase said pair of double monks for a girl?
After a pseudo-extensive Google search*, I have come to the conclusion that if you’re going to do it, you’re going to have to buy men’s monks. Good girl ones don’t seem to exist. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of bad girl ones – the kind with heaps of details, weird toe shapes and all sorts of things to make them more ‘lady-like’ – but that’s not what I want.
So men’s monks. There are plenty of them around, but all seem to come with a pretty high price-tag. I thought I had found the perfect pair in these Run Of The Mill ones, until I’d realised they’ve sold out:
Then I thought I’d found the perfect alternative in these John Lobb’s, until I found out they retail at US$1275.00… (I know the exchange rate is good at the moment, but it’s not that good.):
My third option was this Ovadia & Sons pair, but they have 1. finished their pre-order, and 2. only go down to a Men’s US size 8 which could be okay, but perhaps too risky when considering the US$595.00 price-tag:
So the mission continues and the questions remain unanswered. If anyone can help me out, enlighten me with their monks/double monks knowledge, or has any great opinions on the matter (maybe you think monks on females are a really, really bad idea?), let me know in the comments!
Here I leave you with the inspiration behind this post – the best double monks photo I have ever seen:
*Thanks for the help, Die Workwear and L.A.S!

Dooooo it!!
I think the best way to do it is go vintage. I got a pair of single strap monks off TradeMe for $17 including postage. And absolutely loving them!!!! Despite being a wee bit big it was almost perfect good condition and all!
Hi – here some options I found:
black Ralph Laurens from Net-a-porter

some cheapish black ones and might be available in Auckland from Florsheim on Queen St (you could at least be able to try them on to see if you suit the style etc):

Jade coloured leather from Yoox for a lil bit a colour blocking?:

First off let me start by saying
DO IT!!!!
Double monks are gorgeous and elegant shoes. That I personally think have become a little over played on men (this is pretty much down to the fandom and press generated by a small number of menswear blogers). But now is the time for women to buckle them up and hit the streets.
I Also think that women often pull them off in a dressed down casual manner better than men do.
These are my pick of Double Monks

http://www.thearmourystore.com/shoes/carmina-brown-double-monkstrap-shoes-inca-last
http://www.emling.fr/chaussure-collection/ville/boucle/scott-1527.html
These are based on two things. Most importantly in my mind is price point. Unfortunately there doesn’t really seem to be any really nice double monks available for less than 300 USD. Which means if you are gona go do it right a fairly large chunk of change is going to have to be dropped.. The other is the last that has been used, is it an aggressive more European (read Italian) style or a more reserved typically British/American style . I personally prefer the more reserved lasts and think they also look better when rocked by the ladies.
Regrettably (as you have already said) the Run of the Mill Dub Monks are sold out as are the Howard Younts ( which is the best for price point). My personal favorites are the Carminas from the Armoury, but they have very few sizes available. The Sid Mashburns Double monks may be the best bet then. The price point isn’t great $595 ain’t cheap, but they are beautiful shoes and they have a variety of sizes available.
Hope this helps.
Regards Aidan
Ps. Seeing as you thank Derek I’m assuming you have checked out Die workwears buying guide for double monks
Re: Aiden Kean – Thank you! I love your comment!
Alternatively you could look at these http://www.underground-cybershop.co.uk/acatalog/info_creeper_black_leather_pointed_buckle.html
I have them and they’re amaaazing!
Please please don’t do it, it will look stupid on a girl like you
I have a pair of monk straps and im looking to invest a large amount into a nice new pair, however if you do get some I will have to sell mine as you wearing them will taint double monk straps for a good 10 years.
And I love the fact that you wouldn’t have a clue about any of these brands like John Lobb until you googled it
P.S – Please can you and Isaac just stop blogging and stop making crappy sweaters
Re: Johnny – Thanks for your comment. I wasn’t aware that I wasn’t allowed to use Google to find out more about a topic I don’t know much about. I wasn’t born with an inherent knowledge of brands.
I can’t speak for Isaac, but I don’t think I’ll stop blogging any time in the near future. I do, however, understand if you wish to discontinue reading my blog. There’s no point in doing so if you’re not enjoying it, right?
Hope the new monks work out for you,
Katherine.
Haters gon’ hate.
Hey Katherine,
When I first read this post I thought they looked too manly for women to wear but on a second thought I would love to wear those for work, for a more casual look too but for work would be perfect :-)
Don’t ever let those haters get to you, I’m so happy to have found yours and Isaacs blogs, I hope you guys continue for a very long time.
Love from Brazil!
Re: Rose – Thanks for the kind words. Love from New Zealand!
Why doesn’t “Johnny” start a blog? He sounds like he has a lot of opinions to share with the world.
I feel in love with monks 2 years ago Katherine! Two of my friends are top stylists here in New York and both wear theirs to death in the winter and get them re-soled every fall. And funny enough, they both dress very chic and androgynous. Get a pair and post it!

Firstly re: Johnny – open declarations of label bashing is never chic
Secondly – anyone with access to this type of forum would be an idiot to not ask for info from people around the world as to which brands/products work for them
Thirdly – Katherine is awesome
That is all
:)
You could try Church’s dub monks — yes, they were taken over by Prada, but alas, still a beautiful English shoe. I ogled at a pair in London, but ended up with a midnight-blue women’s brogue.
Hi Kat,
Did you ever pull the trigger on some double monks?
I just did a pre-order with Howard-Younts (I was very patiently waiting and resisting the urge to buy a lesser quality double monk until these were available).
I have also provided a link to a YouTube I did on English made shoes and specifically my Alfred Sargent monk shoes.
Cheerio amigo.
- Michael
Re: Michael – Hi! I never found a pair that worked for me, but I will definitely be looking into it when I get to Paris/NY. I’m thinking if ROTM do a re-stock of their men’s double monks, I’ll be getting their ones (if they come small enough!) Very exciting re. your Howard-Younts! Make sure you let me know how they are when you get them.
These cherry red doc loafers are kinda cool:
