(How self-indulgent is this?! YAY!)
Monthly Archive for December, 2010
I’ve just seen that A.P.C Birkin Patch sweater I want on The Sartorialist. And I’ve noticed it’s still in store at Qubic. There’s one left. And it’s 30% off today.
Daaaammmn, if that’s not a good enough reason to finally get my hands on it, I don’t know what is.
Highs:
- Christmas, duh.
- Extra-ordinary amounts of sleeping.
Low(e)s:
- Nothing is open at this time of year. You go out to get food and no restaurants are open. Unless you want McDonalds. Which I don’t.
- So little going on, that there’s not really any highs or lows to blog this week.
So it’s all over. Another Christmas, another year, just another. I’m in Auckland. It’s a bit of a ghost-town but I kind of like it. It’s nice. And for the next 5 days I’ve got nothing much to do except spend gift vouchers, eat leftover ham and play around with the new lens I got for my camera (thanks mom and dad!) Ahhhhhh bliss.
It’s super warm here in Auckland. Super humid too, but I don’t mind it. It’s kind of nice to be able to go outside without a sweater in tow. I’m trying to make the most of it because in a few short weeks I’ll be surrounded by snow on the other side of the world.
I’m almost sad that we’re forfeiting our New Zealand summer – the beach trips and barbeques, for short days and freezing temperatures. In saying that, I’m also very excited. This will be my first trip to Europe, and as well as the fact that going there is awesome in itself (oh-my-god-EUROPE!), I’m anticipating seeing some amazing winter outfits.

People are ultimately interested in other people. That’s why personal style blogs are so popular. Anyone can go log on to those things and see screens and screens of photos of people, their clothes, their friends, their houses and well, their lives. There’s no denying it – deep down, everyone’s a stalker.
And that’s why I think Where I blog is going to be a winner. It’s kind of like The Selby, but with more writing. Where I blog goes into bloggers homes/offices all around the world and showcases their workspaces. “See where they type, what they keep, and why they write”. (A sneak peek into someone’s house? Don’t mind if I do!) The photos will make you jealous. Some of these bloggers are blogging in pretty plush surroundings. Check it out.
I received this comment yesterday:
“worst part about this shitcunt of a blog is that you paid to register the domain.”
Although it isn’t factually correct (I personally did not pay to register the domain), I am delighted by the fact that someone took time out of their busy day to visit my blog, let alone leave a comment.
So, thanks for that dear reader – I appreciate the sentiment. Merry Christmas to you too. Do come back now, y’hear?
I don’t care how much you love Snoopy’s Christmas, after hearing it the third time, you really want to start hitting yourself in the head. Generally, Christmas songs suck. They really do. There are very few Christmas-related songs or carols that I can stand hearing on repeat over the festive season. Three in fact:
- Last Christmas (I gave you my heart)
- Baby, it’s cold outside.
- Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is you.
That is all. I kind of want to add ‘I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus’ to the list, but my better judgement advises me against this.
Highs:
- Remix magazine’s long lunch at A&M. You know how they say there’s no such thing as a free lunch? Well I beg to differ. This was lunch and it was free (for me at least) and it was delicious. Hoorah!
- This shoot by Peter Lindbergh for Vogue US. Amazing.
- Picked up some winter clothes for my upcoming European excursion. (More on them later.) Starting to feel a little excited…
- Used one of those new fandangled polaroid cameras for the first time yesterday. My goodness they are fun, but holy heck the film is expensive! It’s literally $3.50 – $4.00 a shot. Ridiculous!
Low(e)s:
- The person who complained (thrice) to noise control during Isaac and Anouk‘s party last night, and consequently had it shut down. So sad! Where’s the Christmas spirit?!
- Still haven’t finished Christmas shopping. And when I say ‘haven’t finished’, I actually mean ‘haven’t started’. Fail.
- The rain in Auckland. I hate to complain, but what the f*ck?!
… for Dazed & Confused.
Is it just me or does she look fricken scary in this photo?!
Three things:
- Pharrell is coming to New Zealand (for Rhythm & Vines – tickets and accommodation are still available, get onto it)!
- Isn’t his house fricken amazing?! (A couple more pics below.)
- The Selby is in your place is an awesome website and in book form, it’s even better. You should buy it for someone for Christmas. It would make the perfect gift for a creatively-minded person.
If there’s any guarantee for the Christmas gift-giving period, it’s that you’re never going to have enough money to buy people what you really want to. There’s no resolving the money issue – everyone’s doomed at this time of year – so you have to improvise. And what better place to do so, than the untapped resource that is $3 Japan?!
What?: $3.50 socks from $3 Japan. (It turns out $3 Japan sells things for $3.00 + gst, ie. $3.50).
Best for: Brothers. And some dads. And other people who you don’t want to spend much money on.
Why?: They’re so cheap! And so cool! And they come in a huge variety of colours – grey marles and teal melanges, for instance. (See close-up images below.) And at $3.50 a pop, you can afford to get a few pairs – they do 3 items for $10.00!
The details:
$3 Japan sells some of their socks (as well as a whole bunch of other stuff) online, but for the whole range (and the whole experience of going to a store that literally sells everything you could possibly ever need to survive) it’s best to pop into their Auckland CBD store, 287 Queen Street – just down from Borders.
They’re open Sunday – Thursday: 10am – 9pm and Friday and Saturday: 10am – 10pm.
There’s nothing like a home-made gift. Home-made gifts are thoughtful. They show that person you’ve gone that extra mile, that they are worth those hours you spent painting, glittering and gluing macaroni to the edge of that mirror – that they really mean something to you.
But you know what? Sometimes people just don’t have time to make damned macaroni-mirrors or chocolate chip cookies. That’s when you’ve got to use your business sense and outsource…
What?: Home-made cupcakes! (And other baked goods) from Cinnamon Spoon.
Best for: Females. And those who you would like to acknowledge at Christmas time, but don’t know well enough to splurge on.
Why?: They’re delicious, you can customise them by mixing and matching your cupcake and icing flavours, they look pretty and what female isn’t wooed by a cupcake? Plus the icing is insanely good. I know this because I have eaten it and almost passed out from the sugar rush.
The details:
Cinnamon Spoon cupcakes are available to order (in Auckland) via the website. A box of six is NZ$20.00 + gst, A box of twelve is NZ$36.00 + gst. Delivery is extra.

Isaac and I ordered three Baggu backpacks (green, red and tan) about a month ago. Apart from a small glitch whereby they got delivered to the Netherlands instead of New Zealand, they arrived last week, safe and sound. The bags are made from 100% recycled canvas and have brass buckles. So cute. They’re perfect for summer day trips and despite feeling like a little kid when carrying one, they do come in handy. I recommend you get one. And at US$28.00, you may as well get more than one. So cheap!
(PS: if you do decide you want one of these, note that your laptop may not fit in it. If you’ve got a 13″ macbook pro, it’ll fit but it’s a tight squeeze.)
