La Blogotheque Take-away Shows.

I’ve just been introduced to this awesome website, La Blogotheque.

It’s been around for a good four years now, but if you’re like me and this site is news to you, La Blogtheque is a online archive of videos of artists and bands playing off-the-cuff, ‘Take-away’ shows in the streets, in bars, parks, flats, everywhere and anywhere. The site originated in Paris, but has since taken off and spread worldwide. It’s awesome. Perfect for music fans.

It’s a little bit tricky to navigate your way through the tonnes of videos to find performances by more popular artists (there are so many artists that I have never heard of on there), but when you do, it’s gold. For example, this video of Vampire Weekend singing ‘Mansard Roof’ in a van in Paris. If that’s not you, videos also range from Jens Lekman in Portland, to Stephen Malkmus, the Animal Collective and our very own Ruby Suns in Paris.

Check it out!

Cool-guy pants.

Me in my 'cool-guy' pants. Images/Isaac Hindin Miller

Usually, I’m a big spender when I come to Melbourne. It’s weird. I’ll buy things I wouldn’t usually buy, and spend way more than I ever usually would on items I never really need. It’s like I lose common sense when I cross the Tasman.

This time has been different. I’ve invested in just one item of clothing since arriving in Australia a week ago. I think this demonstrates a good sense of self control. I’m feeling quite proud of myself. Even prouder in the knowledge that in the same space of time, Isaac has purchased three things despite being a self-proclaimed hater of shopping.

So. On to the point of this post. The one thing I’ve purchased (so far) is a pair of pants. Isaac already blogged about them before I got a chance to (I know right?! What is that about?!) but here are more pictures anyway (one more below). The pants are Dr Denim. They only cost me $149 Australian which is kind of a bargain. They’re made of this pale blue, cotton drill which and they kind of remind me of what camp Italian guys would wear in Milan, so I’ve dubbed them my ‘cool-guy pants’. I felt like a super cool guy when I wore them today.

My only problem is that they’re almost a little too cool for me. I’m having a little trouble figuring out what to match that sky blue colour with. Suggestions?

Highs and Lowes.

Highs:

  1. The Olsen hotel pool. Open air, heated and just wonderful to look at. (No time for swimming, unfortunately.)
  2. Wednesday night roast at Sticky in Sydney. Cheap and delicious. Thanks Olivia!
  3. Staying above the Chanel store in Melbourne. (This is also a ‘low’ because I can’t actually afford anything in there.)
  4. My first ride in a Smart car! The Olsen hotel had them for hire. They’re super cute and made travelling in and around the suburbs ten times easier.

Low(e)s:

  1. Flying into Avalon airport, not Tullamarine. Avalon is a $125 taxi ride from town.
  2. $24.95/day internet charges at The Westin.
  3. Melbourne is freezing.

Inside the Wall Fabrics Sydney office.

On the way to the airport yesterday, Isaac needed to pay a quick visit to the Wall Fabrics Sydney office. When we got there I was amazed by how cool the place was. So amazed, that I had to take photos (see below).

The whole building is pretty unassuming from the outside, but once you’ve set foot in the door, it’s a light-filled, exposed, unpolished-wooden-floored set of rooms that have curious bits and pieces around the place. Old signs, a drum kit, a permanent table tennis table, interesting furniture and bits of art. I can’t even explain it really. The only way to describe the place, is super, super cool.
