Monthly Archive for August, 2010
I’ve just been introduced to this awesome website, La Blogotheque.
It’s been around for a good four years now, but if you’re like me and this site is news to you, La Blogtheque is a online archive of videos of artists and bands playing off-the-cuff, ‘Take-away’ shows in the streets, in bars, parks, flats, everywhere and anywhere. The site originated in Paris, but has since taken off and spread worldwide. It’s awesome. Perfect for music fans.
It’s a little bit tricky to navigate your way through the tonnes of videos to find performances by more popular artists (there are so many artists that I have never heard of on there), but when you do, it’s gold. For example, this video of Vampire Weekend singing ‘Mansard Roof’ in a van in Paris. If that’s not you, videos also range from Jens Lekman in Portland, to Stephen Malkmus, the Animal Collective and our very own Ruby Suns in Paris.
Check it out!
Usually, I’m a big spender when I come to Melbourne. It’s weird. I’ll buy things I wouldn’t usually buy, and spend way more than I ever usually would on items I never really need. It’s like I lose common sense when I cross the Tasman.
This time has been different. I’ve invested in just one item of clothing since arriving in Australia a week ago. I think this demonstrates a good sense of self control. I’m feeling quite proud of myself. Even prouder in the knowledge that in the same space of time, Isaac has purchased three things despite being a self-proclaimed hater of shopping.
So. On to the point of this post. The one thing I’ve purchased (so far) is a pair of pants. Isaac already blogged about them before I got a chance to (I know right?! What is that about?!) but here are more pictures anyway (one more below). The pants are Dr Denim. They only cost me $149 Australian which is kind of a bargain. They’re made of this pale blue, cotton drill which and they kind of remind me of what camp Italian guys would wear in Milan, so I’ve dubbed them my ‘cool-guy pants’. I felt like a super cool guy when I wore them today.
My only problem is that they’re almost a little too cool for me. I’m having a little trouble figuring out what to match that sky blue colour with. Suggestions?
Highs:
- The Olsen hotel pool. Open air, heated and just wonderful to look at. (No time for swimming, unfortunately.)
- Wednesday night roast at Sticky in Sydney. Cheap and delicious. Thanks Olivia!
- Staying above the Chanel store in Melbourne. (This is also a ‘low’ because I can’t actually afford anything in there.)
- My first ride in a Smart car! The Olsen hotel had them for hire. They’re super cute and made travelling in and around the suburbs ten times easier.
Low(e)s:
- Flying into Avalon airport, not Tullamarine. Avalon is a $125 taxi ride from town.
- $24.95/day internet charges at The Westin.
- Melbourne is freezing.
On the way to the airport yesterday, Isaac needed to pay a quick visit to the Wall Fabrics Sydney office. When we got there I was amazed by how cool the place was. So amazed, that I had to take photos (see below).
The whole building is pretty unassuming from the outside, but once you’ve set foot in the door, it’s a light-filled, exposed, unpolished-wooden-floored set of rooms that have curious bits and pieces around the place. Old signs, a drum kit, a permanent table tennis table, interesting furniture and bits of art. I can’t even explain it really. The only way to describe the place, is super, super cool.
So I’ve arrived in Melbourne for the second part of the job I’m doing over here in Australia. It wasn’t the easiest getting here – our flight was booked to fly into Avalon airport (instead of Tullamarine), and after a long bus ride and being bypassed by about 5 taxi’s when we got into town, Isaac and I have finally made it.
But don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. All the time taken to get to our hotel was worth it. This hotel is amazing! AMAZING:
Hooray!
Also, the best freshly squeezed blood orange juice I’ve ever had. (Actually, the only freshly squeezed blood orange juice I’ve ever had, but you know what I mean.)
You may or may not already know that I am in Australia. Isaac and I are here doing a really cool, secret job over here. Right now we’re in Sydney, and on Thursday we’re off to Melbourne. I am a lucky girl.
As well as being lucky, I am also busy. And as well as being busy, I am also lazy. Too lazy to write. Therefore I am posting photos of what we did today (between work). Happy viewing!:
This is my hotel room. That is all my stuff on the bed. It’s a mess already. You can’t really tell from the crappy photobooth photo, but there is this full on giant mirror behind the bed head. Full. On. That is me reflected in the mirror. It’s a little creepy, but at the same time totally self-indulgent.
Today we have a big day of work. Wish us luck.
It’s 5.55am. I’m at the airport, bound for Sydney (then Melbourne) on business. Work and travel?! I’m pretty much living the dream, right?!
The airport is a little cold and uninviting. Here is where I would usually complain about how I hate airports and flying, but this time is slightly different. This time I am enjoying the luxuries of the Koru lounge:
(So is Isaac.)
The first thing that pops to mind when I see this is ad is “oh my, does that really work?”
The second is, “how?!”
- Shawty sweater shoot!
- Borrowing my brother’s duffel coat in this crappy weather today. The thing saved my life.
- DJ Darkness Brothers at Holy! Fuck.
- Haircut and life rant with my favourite hairdresser, Jarah.
- This soap that my good friend Sam gifted me. (Thanks Sam!):
While laying on my death bed earlier this week, an email popped into my inbox. In my tired, sudofed-ed-to-the-hills, snotty state, I vaguely recalled the email being some kind of lookbook for Stolen Girlfriends Club‘s ‘Heavy Petal’ collection – their high summer/resort 2010-2011 offering. But being all cold-sweat and head-achey, I didn’t look at it properly until today.
Thoughts:

You may feel like this is overkill, but incase you are interested, here’s a poster for the first Isaac Likes sweater and some out-takes from the shoot. If you want to get your hands on one of these grey marle babies, all the info is here.
For those wondering, in the photos, the girls are wearing smalls and the boys are wearing mediums, and the sweater is 100% cotton and 280gsm in weight. Perfect for spring!
