Just like the title says, hey look – it’s Emily. Emily Theyers. The Sydney-based Kiwi model is in back home for 2-3 weeks according to Model Go-See. I just wish I had something to book her for because I love her look. I also kind of love her shorts.
Monthly Archive for June, 2010
This isn’t really related to anything, but I have to share this with you.
You know what we had for a farewell lunch today at work?
Pizza. But not just your average pizza, pizza by the metre!
My friend told me weeks ago that Auckland’s Toto Restaurant did metre long pizza’s delivered, but I’d never tried one until today. They have a whole bunch of amazing topping combos (champignon mushrooms, smoked mozzarella, baby spinach topped with roasted pine nuts anyone?) and they’re only $36-$49/metre. You can order online, and I’d say a metre of pizza will probably feed 5 of you easily.
Verdict? Yum. Do it.
The end.
How great is this? It’s 44 years old , but if you were to update the make-up and tweak the outfits just slightly, these girls could easily be walking down Ponsonby Road tomorrow. Seriously, how cyclical is fashion? So cyclical.
Actually, I wouldn’t mind a pair of those cream-coloured jeans right about now if I could get my hands on them.
So I wrote wouldn’t shut up about Kate Sylvester’s main collection yesterday, but I’ve just realised I never talked about her Sylvester collection.
Gasp!
My favourites are the skirts. And in the interest of actually keeping readers, I’m limiting myself to just three bullet point observations:
- These skirts are just like the Kate Sylvester a-line ones, but younger and ‘funner’. That’s not a word. Oh. Anyway, they’re good. The one in the centre is actually a dress but I’m loving it with the tee on top.
- Pockets. If only everything I owned had pockets, then I wouldn’t need to carry a bag.
- Holy MOLY is Ella everywhere or what?!
Remember how there used to be Letraset? You know, the dry-rub transfers of the alphabet? Man, they were cool. I used to spend ages transferring those things onto anything and everything. Does that make me a nerd? I don’t mind, I still love Decalcomania, and I love it even more now that I’ve just discovered these:
Third Drawer Down are selling all sorts of different illustrations as Decal-art. This particular piece is a ‘Curated version of every drawing from MOMA’ by Jason Polan. So clever! So arty! Get transferring!
So I already raved about Kate Sylvester’s Spring/Summer 2010-2011 collection back during RAFW, but I’ve just spied the lookbook and I have to go on about it again. Apologies in advance.
Before I start, first of all – I pretty much love the whole collection and it was really hard to narrow it down to the favourites of my favourites, and secondly, before I go on about the things I want – I have to have that bag. Like, I want all the other things, but I need that bag. The shoulder purse is mine. I am not going through the hell I did with the boots from this winter’s collection, I’m already prepared to grab that bag as soon as it comes into stores.
So, moving on from that agressive outburst – here are my favourites from the lookbook:

I’d forgotten about this song for a while, until my good friend reminded me about it last night. It is the best, saddest, break-up song ever. Ever. If you’re into Bright Eyes, you’ll be into it already. If you’re not really into Bright Eyes, you’ll hate it. If you haven’t heard of Bright Eyes? Well this band polarises people for sure. All I can say is, this song is super depressing if you’ve recently come out of a relationship, so if that’s you – I suggest you don’t press play. Or maybe do. You’ll be sad, but it’s the good kind of sad if you know what I mean?
PS. Conor Oberst, will you marry me?

So everyone is making like they’re in the Navy these days. Breton tees are everywhere I look, and I want to get in on this whole striped thing. Why wouldn’t I? They’re classic, easy to wear, and perfect for our pending summer.
It turns out getting hold of one of these things is much easier said than done.
The perfect Breton tee is proving to be hard to find. I want one that’s the perfect length, with the perfect kind of navy stripe and the perfect fit – not too tight, not too long, not too wide in the neck. Is that too much to ask for??! Apparently so.
The Army surplus store on K-Rd has sold out of it’s long-sleeved Breton tops, as has Workshop. There are a few at a couple of chain stores, but the fit just isn’t right. After a 2 hour mission around I’ve finally picked out just what I’ve been looking for, but its $195.00. This is a small problem. It doesn’t really fit within the rules of my financial diet. So that brings me to ask you fellow readers:
Is $195.00 too much to spend on a long-sleeved cotton tee?
If any of you ventured outside today (for those in Auckland), you may have noticed a few things:
- Rain
- Oh my cold, it was freezing (it still is)
- More Rain
Let me start by saying, ‘I do not like winter’. I don’t like the rain, I don’t like the cold and the wind and the feeling of damp clothes and damp hair. I just don’t.
This morning I woke up to the sound of horrendous weather. I tried to ignore it, but couldn’t. I had things to do, things that involved braving the outdoors. And so I did. I put on clothes and went outside and ran my errands.
I got cold. I got rained on. I got grumpy.
Cue: Country Road. The easiest and best chain-store to go for basic knitwear. I went inside, face all angry, hair all drippy and clothes all bedraggled, and headed straight to the men’s section to find something to keep warm in. And that’s exactly what I found. The perfect oversized, speckly-grey, wooly cardigan. I snapped it up and haven’t taken it off since. It’s keeping me warm on the outside and warming my heart on the inside. I mean, look at me in the photo above! Look how happy I am now! It’s surprising what a little warmth and a little shopping can do to improve ones mood.
Okay, my brother and I may look alike, but no – I am not fixed-gear inclined like him. The last time I got on a bicycle was goodness knows when. I gave up on my hot pink and white two-wheeler (with Minnie Mouse bell) so long ago that I can barely remember it. I was never really big on riding anyway. You know how it goes. You get older, helmets are the epitomy of un-cool, and hobbies just fall by the wayside.
Until now.
Why helllloooo Nicholas Hoult! How you have changed since ‘About a Boy‘. Eight years is a long time, and a long way you have come.
I love this ad. The glasses – not so much, but the birds and the blue and the checks? Yes, yes, yes!
A few weeks ago now, I met a girl named Emily. We gots to talkin’ (as you do) and we came across the topic of graphic design. Emily mentioned she’d recently attended an exhibition in Wellington, and for her, the work she’d seen was “the epitome, the definition, of graphic design”. Big call, I thought. I’d never really heard of the guy who’d done the work, but because she was so enthusiastic about him, I endeavored to look him up.
I did, and Emily was right.
Jason Munn (aka ‘The Small Stakes‘) is pure genius. No exaggeration. Originally from Wisconsin, Munn is best known for his award-winning print work, namely his iconic music posters (which I am now obsessed with – see below). He started his one-man, independent design studio back in 2003, and since then, his work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and museum collections.
Like I said last week, I’m really into these old ads. They fulfill all my fashion, design, and art needs at once. This one’s for B.V.D underwear, and is from 1906. And for those who don’t want to do the math, that was 104 years ago.
For me, the best part is the copy: “In hot weather, all tight fitting underwear is sticky and disagreeable.”
Too right!
Question: Why is it that whenever you have money there’s nothing you want to spend it on? And more to the point, why is it that whenever you have no money, there’s a tonne of things you do?
Case in point – Juliette Hogan‘s Spring-Summer 2010/2011 Collection.
So this stuff isn’t actually available for a while (but I can almost guarantee you that when it goes into stores, I’ll be broke), and the weather right now probably doesn’t make you want to look at summer clothes, but for the purpose of this post let’s just pretend it’s November so I can show you the things I like, okay?
My favourites:
