Monthly Archive for January, 2010

Spoke too soon.

I spoke too soon. I was supposed to go to the beach today but the weather has failed. Big time. It’s grey EVERYWHERE, and the weather report says there are going to be showers (sometimes heavy!) tomorrow too. Damn. I don’t want to spend Laneway standing in the rain for 10 hours.

I do however, want to experience this:

This is Florence and the Machine  when they played last week in Sydney. Everyone knows the words! Crazy! Awesome!

Officially Summer.

If you’re in Auckland you will already know that the weather is amazing outside. Seriously, so good.

It’s officially summer and I officially want to go to the beach.

This beachy photo of Zippora (and the two below) are my favourites from an editorial entitled ‘Bay Bay Baby’, shot by Holly Blake for issue 42 of Yen.

Auckland Laneway Map.

For all you fellow Laneway attendees, they’ve posted a picture of the map.

Two days to go! Good times to be had!

Another LOVE cover.

All Images/thelovemagazineblog.wordpress.com

The covers for the forthcoming issue 3 of LOVE Magazine are doing the internet rounds. I’d seen the ones with Lara and Jeneil (below), but not this one of Kristen until just now.

How many more are there to come? Are they going to use them all? We’ll have to wait and see. Six days to go.

Puppy Love.

A long time ago (5 years ago in fact), I worked in retail. It was probably one of the greatest jobs I ever had. The people were great, we used to just hang out and eat lollies all day, try on clothes etc. Anyhow, it was whilst working at this store (the name of which will remain undisclosed for now), that I met Eddie.

Eddie is the funniest person I know in the whole world. That may sound like quite a big call to make, but I have thought about it a lot and he is seriously hilarious. Now that I have said this, I must tell you that this rave about Eddie is actually not related to what I am posting at all, but it was he who alerted me to this editorial in the first place so he deserves some kind of credit. (Thanks dude!)

So, this is a kind of disturbing shoot done for Ssense. I’m not sure exactly whether I’m just a prude (this isn’t really much worse than some of Terry Richardson’s stuff… right?) or if this shoot really is crossing the line, but it makes me feel kind of uncomfortable nonetheless.

It’s entitled ‘Puppy Love’. It features a girl and a dog and a bunch of Alexander Wang (amongst other stuff). I don’t know what else to say about it exactly, but this comment from the photographers (Leda & St-Jacques) sums it up pretty well:

“It’s too difficult to find a man, so find a dog!”

So does this comment from a reader:

“It looks more like a beastiality promo than a promo for clothes”

It’s interesting to say the least. Some may even think it’s funny. Check the rest out below. What do you think?

Pocketful of Jens.

I am pretty excited today. The Swedish-born, Melbourne-residing, singer-songwriter Jens Lekman is in town. If you don’t know who he is, look him up and watch the video! (If you do know and you don’t like him, I give you permission to stop reading here).

This is something similar (hopefully) to what I am going to be seeing tonight at the Montecristo Room:

Join me! Tickets are only $28. And for that amount, you SHOULD come running with your heart on fire.

PS: Sorry about the kind of crappy quality video.

PPS: Sorry about that ‘heart on fire’ line.

The Fun Theory.

Okay, let me just warn you now, this is like, the most cleverest thing I have ever come across in a while. (Yes, I do know that that doesn’t make sense grammatically. Be prepared to be impressed is what I’m trying to say).

The Fun Theory is an initiative brought about by Volkswagen. It’s (as you probably already guessed) all about making things fun. The whole premise behind the thing is the theory that by making an activity more fun, you’re able to potentially change human behaviour. For example:

“‘Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator and feel better’ is something we often hear or read in the Sunday papers. Few people actually follow that advice. Can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun to do?”

The answer? Yes.

See the results:

There are also other great ones, check out them out here.

A Loewe for a Lowe?

All Images/via fashiongonerogue.com

Hello Daria,

How are you doing? Let me just start by saying well done – you look so lovely in this shoot. (Gosh we must also say a ‘well done’ to Inez & Vinoodh. They do such a good job, don’t they?)

Anyhow, to the point. I was just wondering – see that satchel you’re carrying there? Yes, that one. Do you think it would be possible for you to maybe send that over to me in little ol’ New Zealand? It looks like just the size I need to carry my things around in, and you know I would be so appreciative. And don’t you think this Lowe deserves a little bit of that Loewe in her life?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Much Love,

Katherine Lowe

PS: If for some reason you’re unable to fulfill my satchel dreams, I fully understand. However, I do just want to let you know that I’d also be extremely happy to receive the below bag as a kinda-sorta consolation prize…? Just incase you were wondering…

Another tennis-fashion-faux-pas rant.

Another ‘omg-what-she-thinking?-outfit’ from the Australian Open:

Venus Williams with skin-coloured knickers under her dress. I really have no words for this. Read about it here.

And while we’re at it, Sharapova. What was she thinking? I mean, she’s an attractive girl – it would be hard for her to look bad in anything, but her peacock-style, gauzy-chiffony dress thing (below)? What WAS that about?

Dree Hemingway, my future BFF.

Question: How do I go about becoming BFF’s with Dree Hemingway?

I love her – she is ‘like, my favourite thing ever’.

Lily Watch #11

This issue of Lily Watch brings us old Lily, back in the March 2007 issue of Vogue Italia. I love this, I had never seen before until a few days ago, the classroom looks delightful – the periodic table and vintage beakers and the blackboard – so charming! It almost, almost makes me want to go back to school. Almost. Also, her black lips and black eyebrows look amazing. Not to mention the huge beehive/bun thing she’s got going on – it’s schoolteacher chic! (Hmm… Did I really just say that?)

This is probably my favourite photo from the shoot (above). Look at the way she’s grasping those papers like a haughty child. So good! The whole masterpiece was shot by Emma Summerton and entitled ‘Everyday Perfection’. Everyday perfection indeed. I love it. See the rest below.

Tennis Rant.

If you read this blog you will know that I used to play tennis, and that I went to the Australian Open last week. If you don’t read this blog, it doesn’t matter because I just filled you in.

Tennis outfits have changed a lot over the years. Especially for women. That isn’t to say that the men’s outfits aren’t out there (Nadal’s 3/4 length pants and sleeveless shirts?! What?!) but honestly, I think the women’s outfits are just plain crazy these days. Like, over the top, what the f are you wearing, crazy. Some aren’t so bad, but this outfit I saw last week on French player – Aravane Rezai – um… out of this world.

I would be screaming too if I had to wear this. Images/via gettyimages.com

It’s a black and shiny gold lycra ensemble. Click the images (and ignore the watermarks) to see larger. (If you dare). I think she kind of looks like a space cadet, all futuristic and what not. I mean, look at the sleeves. And get this, the skirt has black lace trim on it. I know this because I was literally about 5 metres away from her at one stage.

Ahhhh! I don’t know who makes this particular get-up, but what were they THINKING?!

Laneway Timetable.

The timetable is up!

Image/St Jeromes Laneway Festival

Hoorah!

Daniel Johnston (and others), here I come. I can’t wait. I hope the weather is mint.

Oh, and incase you haven’t heard already, the mystery band is Chris Knox and the Nothing.

Afterthought: It has just occurred to me that there are only two stages. The other Laneway’s I have been to (in Australia, mind you) had like 5 stages. wtf.

Chequerboard Ring.

So, I’ve never been much of a ring-wearer – I’ve always wanted to be, and love girls who wear stacks of them, but for some reason I just don’t really ever put the things on. In saying that, yesterday I picked up my new Karen Walker Chequerboard Ring that I have been going on about for months. I ordered it in December and it finally arrived on Friday. I’m still getting used to wearing it. It’s so big. It feels heavy, but in a good way. So far I’m liking it.

The stone looks dark in my crappy photobooth photo, but really the smokey quartz is quite light. I think I am going to have to buy other rings to wear with this one though – as opposed to wearing it on it’s own – what do you think?

Shwood, in real life.

So the other day I blogged about how my friend Brad was obsessed with these wooden sunglasses right? So it turns out he was obsessed enough to actually buy them. I saw him last night and had a chance to see them in real life and actually try them on. They’re as you would imagine wooden sunglasses to be. Very light, and kind of textured. I made a photobooth montage of myself in them (as you do). Ohhhh the exciting things I get up to on a Friday night huh…

Anyhow, if you want a pair, their online store stocks them and ships to New Zealand!
