AUT Rookie Show – Part 1: UPDATED

The first time I encountered Ana Vemic was back in high school, 6th form. Back in 6th form Ana scared the shit out of me (most people scared the shit out of me actually), but that’s another story. It wasn’t until I was 19 that I actually met Ana ‘for realz’. We worked together for a while, back at what we fondly refer to as ‘the zon’. It was then that my fear of her diminished, and it was also then that I discovered that Ana had an eye for fashion. Real creative talent. So.. fast forward a few years to last night, where I actually got to see the fruits of Ana’s labour. At the AUT Rookie show.
Okay, so I actually don’t know that much about fashion, like the nitty gritty things – I couldn’t tell you about Prada’s Spring Collection from ’93 and compare it’s aesthetic to todays designs. I just like clothes. Oh. Anyway, the show was good. I liked some of the stuff, some… not so much. But because I’m not a fashion expert, I am not going to try to get all preachy and pretend to know what I’m talking about, instead I am going to write a list on my thoughts on the night (I heart lists).
Thoughts on AUT Rookie Show 09:
I like the word ‘Rookie’. It rhymes with ‘Cookie’ and it reminds me of baseball. It’s a good word but I hate it when it’s incorporated with ‘AUT’ and ‘Show’. I hate the way they call it the ‘AUT Rookie Show’. It annoys the hell out of me. I wish they would change the name.
Too much obscure drapey, odd-fitting knitwear.
So I don’t know the advanced details about how models are supposed to walk, but I am pretty sure a few of the models needed more practice. There is something disconcerting about watching a show where all you can do is think is “Why is she bobbing like that? Why.”
I like St Pauls church as a venue.
Bowler hats on Alana Bishop’s collection = awesome. Also the fact that her collection was very tailored, and one of the more structured collections – I like.
Love Ana’s socks tights combo, and grey knitted coat. Perfect for snuggling.
I can’t be 100% sure, but I am 98% sure none of the models were wearing high heels. For any of the outfits. This interests me.
Loved first lot of menswear. Am not positive, but think it was by Blaire Archibald. I really should have written the names of the designers down. oh.

And because I know Ana, and am therefore bias towards her, I have also included this great plug for her work* (Ana, you can thank me later – maybe with one of those knitted coats you got goin’ on, perhaps?):
Things you need to know about Ana. Ana Vemic was born in February of 1985. She was born in Serbia. She has a penchant for gold jewellery and Dunhill Reds if I remember correctly. She is good value. She is incredibly nice, but don’t fuck with her because I am pretty sure she knows martial arts and could kick the shit out of you. She knows what she likes when it comes to fashion and it’s kind of nice to know someone who isn’t dictated by what everyone else is wearing.
What she has to say about her Winter 2010 collection, ‘Lost not Lonely’:
“My collection is a mutation of contrasting and opposing ideas. It is dark with hybrid layers yet effortless and relaxed. The clothes have an ease about them.  Pattern and design are embedded into the garments,  however on the exterior they are clean, simple and uncomplicated. Silhouette is key.”
As I said above, I love the knitted coat. I want to get it, put it on in June and not take it off until September. It looks warm and cuddly and everything you need when you are drinking hot chocolate by the fire. I also love the pants. I think they’re leather. The detail in them is crazy.
*HEY! Wait! Before you think I am only writing about Ana’s collection because I know her – take note, I ACTUALLY think it’s good. The amount of detail and the amount of ‘Ana’ I can see in it is amazing. It’s different and the layering is gooodddd. So yeah, if I thought the collection was shit I would probably just pretend I didn’t know her. That is how shallow I am.

  10. Second note to self: Learn more about fashion so I can say more insightful and clever things about future shows.

There is more montage coming but it is like, 2.14am and there isn’t photoshop on this computer and I am having a small mare. I’ll post montage part 2, later.
