The Department Store.

IMG_0851

Today has been a very weird day. I have been in a very weird mood. Last night I got to bed at 4am. I woke at 7.50am this morning with the feeling of pending doom. I couldn’t sleep. It was like I had just had 3 short blacks in a row and I was all wirey and weird. It has been an uncomfortable day.

I am telling you this because it has hindered my writing skills (not that I had many in the first place). I went to the Department Store today, and instead of writing a HILARIOUS post on what it was like as I had planned, I am going to skip it all together and just insert a photo essay (below) instead. Yes it is a cop out, but I honestly can’t even think properly.

Semi-comprehendable thoughts on The Department Store/My day today:

  1. Murray Bevan is one of the politest people I have ever met. Note to self – also think he may be a secret genius?
  2. I am a better photographer than I thought I was. I am actually kind of good. (MODEST ANYONE?)
  3. Weird view of this quasi-carpark from the tea room.
  4. Awesome spiral staircase and awesome red piano in window. And awesome spherical lights.
  5. Good shopping bags.

Walk through the Valley.

You may have read already that my kid brother did another shoot last Sunday. This is true. The work is tentatively titled ‘Walk through the Valley’, but with James, you never know if it’s going to change or not. He sent me one of the final edits he’s done at 1am this morning, and refuses to send me any others, so this is all you get:

Yes, that is real fire. Yes, it was dangerous and exciting. And yes, we did have a fire warden and fire extinguisher.

You may have also heard that some of James’ gear got stolen out of his car. This is also true. If you see any double dark slides being traded on the black market, let us know! You MAY also be thinking ‘um… what kind of idiot leaves valuables in their car!” – you’re not the only one.

Anyway, enough. James’ final works (along with some other awesome Elam work, I’m sure) will be able to be viewed at the end of November. Come check it out. I will keep you posted on the actual dates etc.

Shane Koyczan = Amazing.

It was about two years ago that my friend Kate introduced me to Shane Koyczan. She was making a doco on Poets at the time, and had discovered the performance poet was coming to New Zealand. She was excited. Super excited. She had an interview lined up and everything. I, on the other hand, had no idea who the hell he was. I was reluctant to get into performance poetry. Kate persevered.  She showed me a youtube clip of him and that was all I needed. I watched it literally about 11 times that day. HE WAS (IS) AMAZING.

I had forgotten about Shane until recently, and just watched one of my favourite performances from him. I am hooked again. Check it out. It will perk up your day, I promise. Honestly, he is amazing. So clever. I love. Thanks Katey.

Kate Sylvester's Gordon Shorts aka My Victory.

KS-Gordon-3
For weeks and weeks I had been trying to convince Boyfriend that he needs the ‘Gordon‘ shorts from Kate Sylvester. Ever since he tried them on at the start of October. WEEKS. Every time I suggested they be his birthday present from me, I was greeted with a ‘No. They’re nice, but they’re too expensive’. Infuriating. I can’t even begin to explain how badly I wanted him to have them (I’m weird and obsessive). Infuriating. I was starting to give up on the prospect of him owning the delightful things, until I saw Isaac got a pair. I got jealous. I tried harder. It wasn’t until a week ago that I had my breakthrough.
It was Sunday and boyfriend was hungover. He had been out the night before and spent heaps of money, including over $120 on one round of drinks for him and 5 others. I used this, and the fact that he was weak and hungover (and therefore less able to fight back) as leverage. It went something like this:

Mad Men – The suit.

MadMen-BrooksBrothers-Suit-1

All Images/www.brooksbrothers.com

If you fancy yourself a bit of a ‘Don Draper’ from Mad Men, look no further – you can now purchase your very own Mad Men-branded, limited edition suit! The show’s award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant, has created the 60′s inspired grey sharkskin suit as the first in a whole plethora of Mad Men clothes (including evening gowns and office wear).

The 2 button, hand-finished, American-made suit is available at Brooks Brothers – I suggest you purchase one of the 250 available, slick back your hair and start chain smoking and drinking at 10am. And to make it more authentic (and because you will be so tired from harassing all the female staff in the workplace), take a leaf out of Roger Sterling’s book and crash on the office couch. More shots below.

Lily in ‘French Twist’, shot by Patrick Demarchelier for Vogue China. Love her. She looks like Quinn Hodes off Weeds. I love Quinn off Weeds. Therefore my love for Lily is to the power of 2 if I work it out mathematically.

More after the jump.

Raquel Zimmerman gets Graffi-Couture.

I just saw this over at Nivin in the Crates and had to repost because of these crazy shoes! Plus because Raquel Zimmerman looks hot. Plus she is rockin’ some pretty extreme outfits.
Shot by Mario Sorrenti for Vogue Paris, the editorial entitled ‘Graffi-Couture’ features NY based artist, KAWS.

Balenciaga Resort 2010.

These pics are old but I am posting them now because I am feeling spring in the air. I am also feeling summer – only a little bit (- the appearance of the sun does not fool me, it’s still damn cold outside), but it’s enough to get my mind thinking about expanding my summer wardrobe. I can’t wait to be able to leave the house without 2 cardigans.

Resort collections. You either love ‘em or you hate ‘em. I love them. Especially these outfits from Balenciaga’s Resort 2010. They do it for me. I am partial to the dresses (below). Actually, I am pretty partial to the whole collection when I think about it. I would totally (if I had the funds) purchase these items for my next vacation. No, rephrase, I WILL totally buy them when I am a rich jetsetter living in the Bahamas.

Paper planes.

Okay, so imagine. You’re coming home from work. You come into your house, you take off your jacket. You look to your right. Weird, there is a paper plane that looks like it has crashed into your wall, on your wall. What do you do with it? YOU HANG YOUR JACKET IT ON IT! Hang your stuff from a plane! Get one here.

Oh wow that was a really lame piece of writing. I apologise.

PS – I just had a thought. Imagine if you had heaps of these on a wall all lined up with all your hats and bags on them. What would it even look like? Um… freakin’ amazing. That’s what.

Bic Pen.

Okay, my brother posted this somewhere the other day and I was all ‘whatever, a photo, whatever’, but now I have discovered that OMG it is hand drawn with a BIC PEN. Hand drawn with a bic pen by Spanish artist, Juan Francisco Casas.

It is freakin’ amazing. A.MAZING.

More below and here.

St Jerome's Laneway comes to Auckland – UPDATED

This year and last year I went to Australia to go to St Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Laneway tours around Aus and is like a really small big day out where everyone is over 18 and all the girls have red lipstick and fringes. And all the guys have tight pants and raybans – in other words, it’s full of hipsters. This year they had Girl Talk, Architecture in Helsinki, etc etc. It was okay. Last year they had Broken Social Scene, Feist, Dan Deacon, Okkervil River, etc etc. – it was awesome.
ANYWHO, next year line-up was announced recently and based on that, I have no plans on crossing the ditch, but I have just discovered that if I change my mind, there will be no need:
“New Zealanders are in for a treat when the very first Laneway Festival comes to town. Britomart Square is just two steps from Britomart Station (the city’s largest transportation station), just two minutes from the sea. The square itself is perfect for Laneway, with room to fit stalls, stages and audience comfortably, complete with sculpture and a park. When the festival’s over, it’s just a few steps back on to the bus (or a boat if you plan to go to Fiji for the after party)!”
The first line-up announcement as follows:
Echo & The Bunnymen, Florence and The Machine, Black Lips, The XX, Daniel Johnston, Sarah Blasko, N.AS.A, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Hockey, Dappled Cities, Mumford and Sons, Radio Clit, The Very Best, Wild Beasts, Whitely, The Middle East, Kid Sam, Dirty Three (Melbourne only) and more to be announced.
Monday 1 February Auckland Britomart Station.

Conversation with my Dad.

Him: “Kath.”

“Yeah?”
“You know your blog?”
“Yeah?”
“All you write about is clothes.”
“…”
“Why don’t you write about something interesting?”
“.”

Me: “Yeah?”

Him: “You know your blog?”

Me: “Yeah?” (Skeptical voice)

Him: “All you write about is clothes.” (Serious voice)

Me: “…”

Him: “It’s not very interesting, why don’t you write about something interesting?”

Me: “.”

Claudia Schiffer gets quirky.

I saw this on the weekend and I thought to myself,
1. This is ACTUALLY awesome. Oh jeepers this is so good.
2. This is exactly what my friend kate would do if she were directing a photoshoot.
3. must regurgitate this onto my blog so the world can see how good it is/must post one day when you have nothing else to write about.
Claudia Schiffer, shot by Erwin Wurm for Vogue Germany. It cracks me up and also makes me go ‘what…?’ at the same time. I LOVE.

AUT Rookie Show – Part 2: Ode to Ana

Ana_W-10_9Ana_W-10_2Ana_W-10_8
The first time I encountered Ana Vemic was back in high school, 6th form. Back in 6th form Ana scared the shit out of me (most people scared the shit out of me actually), but that’s another story. It wasn’t until I was 19 that I actually met Ana ‘for realz’. We worked together for a while, back at what we fondly refer to as ‘the zon’. It was then that my fear of her diminished, and it was also then that I discovered that Ana had an eye for fashion. Real creative talent. So.. fast forward a few years to last night, where I actually got to see the fruits of Ana’s labour. At the AUT Rookie show.
